One of the most intriguing storylines to follow in the 2025 NFL season is unfolding with the Indianapolis Colts. Two high-profile quarterbacks as Daniel Jones and star Anthony Richardson, are battling for the starting job, pushing each other week after week to earn it.
The offseason provides important context. Richardson did not participate in Colts minicamp due to a shoulder issue that will once again keep him sidelined during early practices. However, doctors have ruled out surgery and expect him to be ready for training camp in late July.
In Richardson’s absence, Jones has more opportunities, but it remains to be seen how highly the Colts value him. As of now, months ahead of the season opener, the scenario appears evenly split, although there are signs one of them may have the upper hand.
The competition between Jones and Richardson
NFL insider Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported that Jones is gaining ground in the Colts’ quarterback battle. “Daniel Jones is making his move a bit in minicamp, taking those first-team reps with Anthony Richardson resting his shoulder, who plans to be back for training camp for that battle,” he said.
“I was told Jones was a fast processor at the line of scrimmage and had good chemistry with his receivers. He was, quote, ‘very sharp,’ as was told to me, in minicamp as ‘the guy,’” Fowler added. Given Richardson’s injury situation, the former New York Giants quarterback is making the most of his opportunity.
The Colts’ view of Jones
Within the organization, Jones has been praised for his accuracy and his standout intelligence in reading defenses. Head coach Shane Steichen acknowledged his strong showing, calling him “a very smart guy, with great command of the locker room and a consummate professional.”
