Nathan MacKinnon is one of the NHL’s standout stars for his performance with the Colorado Avalanche. Despite his status, the veteran forward doesn’t miss an opportunity to show his admiration for colleagues who will be joining him on Team Canada.

The mutual respect between two stars serves as a testament to leadership and dedication in professional hockey. At such a high level, egos are set aside, and the Avalanche star has shown his most complimentary side toward superstar Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins, who will share the roster with him at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

MacKinnon and Crosby are both from Nova Scotia and have spent time together in training sessions. They have also been teammates on national teams. In that sense, the Avalanche star recalled his admiration for Crosby since he was young and how his influence has been fundamental to his development.

MacKinnon’s statement about Crosby

“I’m sure he’s like a father figure to guys. He’s one of the best ever. I’m sure it’s a lot of fun for those guys to play with him. I remember when I was 19 and he was probably 26, 27, and it was amazing for me too. Definitely a cool feeling,” MacKinnon said about Crosby, according to NHL.com.

Sidney Crosby #87 of the Pittsburgh Penguins skates against the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center on April 11, 2025 in Newark, New Jersey.

“He helped me a ton. He’s the main vet that helped me, and he wasn’t even on my team. I’m very lucky. Who knows where I’d be right now without him? I’m sure those guys are picking his brain. I think it’s just natural. He’s a leader,” Mackinnon added.

MacKinnon’s comments underscore the importance of Crosby’s winning mindset and leadership, qualities that new generations of players seek to emulate. The Colorado star highlighted the hunger for success that his teammate maintains even after having achieved so much.
