Bedard and the Hawks fought until the final horn, but it was all in vain. Two streaks were kept alive after the Avs’ 1-0 win: Chicago has now lost three in a row — for the third time in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NHL</a> season — and Colorado extended its win streak to 9 games. Regardless, after the game, Blashill made sure to praise Bedard and company for their effort.

Blashill’s approach has certainly impacted the rest of the team. That was made clear when veteran forward Jason Dickinson addressed the media with a very sincere postgame admission.



‘‘We can be both happy with the process [and] not satisfied with the result,’’ Dickinson commented. ‘‘It sucks, but, for the most part, that’s a lot of good clips that we can go back and watch and be proud of.’’

“I feel like we could have maybe had one or two more power plays,” Zibanejad said. “Just got to do a better job staying out of the box, obviously. But power play came through in a way, so that’s a positive that we can take with us.”

However, as the two former first overall picks went to battle in The Gateway to the North, only the Nova-Scotian delivered. “After the first goal, there was a lot of deflation. Especially off the second one, off the face-off, and after that, it was a lot of guys beating themselves up and not playing very well,” Knoblauch added. “A lot of not looking like a cohesive team right now, just not playing very well right now and that’s on the coaching staff, mostly myself, to get that aligned.“

“Right from puck drop, I’d say we were kind of flat. There’s mistakes kind of all over the ice,” Oilers forward Andrew Mangiapane told NHL.com. “I don’t know if we’re just thinking that it’s going to come easy to us. So, it just starts there. Everyone just buying in and just bringing that intensity, whatever that is for you. Each player is different.”



With the final score reading 9-1 in favor of Colorado, Knoblauch recorded his worst loss as head coach in Edmonton. Obviously, the losses in the Stanley Cup Final will always be the most heartbreaking, but in terms of goal difference, this is the first time his Oilers lose by 8 goals—and only the second time the franchise loses by as many at home.

The previous worst loss had been an 8–1 defeat to the Vancouver Canucks during the 2023–24 NHL season opener—Knoblauch’s head coaching debut with the Oilers. If there’s any silver lining to such disheartening losses, it’s that everything turned out fairly well after that horrible debut. Perhaps the Oilers can turn things around again. As reported by Elliotte Friedman, the Avalanche and Necas agreed on an eight-year, $92 million extension. The deal will get in effect in the 2026-27 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NHL</a> season, as Necas plays out the final season of his two-year, $13M contract.



<h2>Makar next in line</h2>



With Necas locked up for the long run, the Avs still have one major task ahead. Makar is the last core member left to re-sign in Colorado. However, he remains ineligible to sign a new contract for now. The star defenseman is under contract through the 2026–27 campaign, making him eligible to sign an extension next summer before entering the final year of his deal.

With his new contract, Necas is now the second highest-paid player on the Avalanche. The Czech forward will make $11.5 million per season, only trailing MacKinnon, who makes $12.6M every year. The former first overall pick in 2013 signed an eight-year, $100.8 million contract with Colorado in 2022. He is currently playing through the third season of the contract. MacKinnon will be 35 when his current contract comes to an end after the 2030-31 NHL campaign.



Though no longer with the Avs, many fans wonder how much Necas makes compared to Mikko Rantanen. After all, Necas is in Denver because the Avalanche chose not to sign The Moose to such a hefty deal. However, Rantanen has since signed an eight-year, $96 million contract with the Dallas Stars. 



In the end, Necas will make just $500,000 less per year than Rantanen. In more ways than one, the brass in the Mile High City might have learned that going cheap can get expensive.

On a recent episode of his podcast, Bissonnette broke down why MacKinnon’s contract, signed after his entry-level deal, stands out. While McDavid’s mega-extension grabbed headlines, Bissonnette argued that MacKinnon’s seven-year, $44.1 million deal was a rare win for both player and team.



“It’s one of the greatest contracts ever signed for a team,” Bissonnette said. “He signed that deal where I want to say he had 50-60 points, and I think he was making $6.2 million, or making $5.9 million. And he was Nathan MacKinnon. So that was one of the greatest ones I can remember over the last 10 years.”

Former Penguins winger chooses Avalanche star's deal over McDavid's as best of the last decade

For Nathan MacKinnon, the 2026 Winter Olympics will be a career-defining moment. The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/colorado-avalanche">Colorado Avalanche </a>forward has never competed in the Games, as NHL players last participated in 2014. Yet this generation of elite stars is now preparing for Milan, with high expectations from a nation hungry for gold.



MacKinnon reflected on the experience of representing Team Canada, recalling his first tournament earlier this year. “Yeah, (playing in a major event with Canada) is something I’ve never experienced until the 4 Nations, just the whole country rooting for you,” he said via QMJHL on “X”. “But there’s a lot of pressure as well. I mean, for us, it’s gold or bust, which is a great feeling.”



The forward’s leadership and scoring ability were on full display at the inaugural 4 Nations Face-Off, where he earned MVP honors while adapting to head coach Jon Cooper’s systems.
