“I feel like we could have maybe had one or two more power plays,” Zibanejad said. “Just got to do a better job staying out of the box, obviously. But power play came through in a way, so that’s a positive that we can take with us.”

“Right from puck drop, I’d say we were kind of flat. Obviously, the losses in the Stanley Cup Final will always be the most heartbreaking, but in terms of goal difference, this is the first time his Oilers lose by 8 goals—and only the second time the franchise loses by as many at home.

The deal will get in effect in the 2026-27 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NHL</a> season, as Necas plays out the final season of his two-year, $13M contract.

With Necas locked up for the long run, the Avs still have one major task ahead. Makar is the last core member left to re-sign in Colorado. The star defenseman is under contract through the 2026–27 campaign, making him eligible to sign an extension next summer before entering the final year of his deal.

“The Avs in talks with Necas’ agent have said ‘Listen, there’s an ecosystem here and we’re going to have to sign Cale Makar to a healthy raise next summer and MacKinnon makes $12.6 million,’ so where does that leave Martin Necas,” LeBrun explained.

<h2>Avalanche confident an agreement can be reached</h2>

With Colorado battling through the absence of injured goalie Mackenzie Blackwood, the 24-year-old netminder has been tossed into the fire. <h2>Little experience</h2>



Though selected by the Avalanche in the 2019 NHL entry Draft, Miner didn’t make his career debut until last season. So far, he’s appeared in four games, registering an average of 2.34 goals allowed per game and a .896 save percentage.

Miner could’ve done better on New Jersey’s second goal of the game, when Jack Hughes beat him on the glove side with a subtle wrist shot. Still, his performance wasn’t the reason the Avalanche fell to the Devils during their stay in Newark.

Regardless of who is mostly to blame for the recent struggles in Colorado, MacKinnon and company know searching for a culprit is a lost battle. Instead, the Avalanche must get back to work, hoping to snap the losing hex before it spirals on to something even worse. Up next, the Avs will have another go at the Devils, this time at Ball Arena in the Mile High City.



The Avalanche haven’t lost five games in a row since the 2022–23 NHL season. Still, if there’s ever a bright spot in Colorado’s current outlook, it’s the fact that the Avs are selling their losses at a high price. The Avalanche have salvaged a point in three of their last four games. Being able to close out games or secure wins in overtime or shootouts is key, but at least they aren’t walking away empty-handed from matchups with tough opponents.

After four consecutive first-round exits, the mission for the Kings is pretty much self-explanatory. Los Angeles has either fallen in the opening round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs or missed them altogether in their last 11 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NHL</a> seasons. Something must change in LA, and veteran Perry might flip that switch.



However, it could all be off to a bad start, as the 40-year-old is unable to make his debut with the Kings when they take on the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/colorado-avalanche" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Avalanche</a> on October 7. With Perry out, the pressure only increases for other veterans—namely, Anze Kopitar, who will gear up for the last season opener of his NHL career.



<h2>Why is Corey Perry not playing?</h2>



Perry sustained a knee injury during one of the Kings’ practices in the NHL preseason. The Stanley Cup-winning veteran underwent surgery and was expected to be sidelined for six or eight weeks. His estimated timeline projects him to make his debut as an LA King in late October.

The last thing head coach Jim Hiller and the medical staff in Los Angeles want is to rush Perry’s recovery. Being 40 in the NHL is not easy, and re-aggravating the issue could be catastrophic for the veteran’s career.

<h2>New surroundings</h2>



Perry is definitely familiar with the faces around the Kings. However, he has yet to walk into it as a member of the home team.



As Perry transitions into his new organization, an injury right from the get-go is far from an ideal start. Still, if there’s something Perry is used to, it’s adversity—and that has never stopped him from chasing Lord Stanley. Though his record in the Final could haunt him, for the veteran it’s only added motivation. 



<h2>Flipping the script</h2>



His surroundings have changed; he is no longer in frosty Edmonton. Now, he’s back in the Golden State—back where his journey began. It could all come full circle for Perry. It’s time to slay the demons of the past for Perry and the Kings. If their trends combine, they could be in for glory.

Perry has made it to the Stanley Cup Final in five of the last six seasons, while Los Angeles hasn’t made it out of the first round since 2014. “The way we play here, I think it kind of fits my game. It was definitely a shock when I was traded, but yeah. On [an extension], we’re talking… we’ll see what’s going to happen,” Martin Necas commented during his press conference. “Can’t really tell you, I don’t even know. It will be interesting and, you know, it’s more about my agent.”

The Avalanche aren’t new to heartbreaking losses in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Frankly, no team in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> is. But last season’s elimination cut deeper than any other—because it came in a Game 7, because a familiar face like Rantanen was at the center of it, and because there were countless moments when the puck could’ve bounced the other way. 



It didn’t, and ultimately, Colorado was out, and Dallas was in. MacKinnon didn’t sugarcoat his feelings when addressing the recent defeat in the postseason, voicing a sincere comment.



“It still hurts, for sure,” MacKinnon admitted during media day in Denver. “I thought we were good enough to win last year. You aren’t going to win every single year, even with the same team. Lot of things need to fall into place.”

“Special teams lost us that series. Definitely, that was the issue. I don’t know how far negativity can drive for the next nine months. We’re trying to be positive,” MacKinnon added.

“Anything is possible. But if I’m in Necas’ camp, why would I? If you’re Necas, why would you sign before that? Necas doesn’t have to wait, but it’s smart business on their end to do so,” as stated by Evan Rawal on the Denver Gazette.
