That’s why, a report from Chris Johnston indicates that the Oilers’ performance in the 2025-2026 season will be crucial in determining McDavid’s final decision. Many teams would be ready if Edmonton collapses.
“Obviously, there are 31 teams that would like to have him but there are probably 10 teams that think they’d be in the running if they ever got a chance. I don’t know what’s going to happen.”
According to Johnston, of those 10 teams with real chances, this would be the list of front runners. Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, Los Angeles Kings, Tampa Bay Lightning, Vegas Golden Knights and New York Rangers.
