Sporting CP earned a hard-fought 1-0 win over Porto at the Jose Alvalade Stadium in the opening leg of their 2026 Taca de Portugal semifinal matchup. Thanks to a second-half strike from Luis Suarez, the Lions will carry a slim but significant aggregate lead into the return leg at the Estádio do Dragao.

The first half was a largely disjointed affair, characterized by a high volume of fouls from both sides that prevented either team from establishing any real rhythm. With the ball out of play frequently, clear-cut scoring opportunities were at a premium during a physical opening 45 minutes.

However, the tempo shifted early in the second half when Alan Varela rattled the post with a powerful effort, signaling Porto’s intent to break the deadlock. Despite that scare, it was Sporting CP who eventually found the breakthrough. The referee awarded a penalty after Seko Fofana fouled Morten Hjulmand inside the box, allowing Suarez to step up and calmly convert from the spot.

Following the goal, the Lions successfully neutralized the Dragons’ attack to see out the victory. While the match featured few bright offensive moments, the result puts Rui Borges’ side in a favorable position to reach the final as it prepare for the trip to Porto.
