Saúl “Canelo” Alvarez, 34, currently holds the WBC, WBA, and WBO super middleweight titles, and could reclaim his status as undisputed champion when he faces William Scull next weekend. While Canelo is also expected to take on American pound-for-pound superstar Terence Crawford later this year, WBC President Mauricio Sulaimán made it clear that the winner of this Saturday’s bout between Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn will become a legitimate contender on the global stage.
“Absolutely. Canelo has embarked on a new stage of his career,” Sulaimán stated according to Sky Sport. “He will fight in Riyadh and is then scheduled to fight in Las Vegas. The winner this Saturday is going to be a major player in boxing worldwide, certainly.“
For Chris Eubank Jr., 35, who has previously competed at super middleweight, a potential showdown with boxing icon Canelo would represent a significant career milestone—particularly if he emerges victorious this weekend.

Benn faces a different kind of challenge
For Conor Benn, the challenge is more complex. Though currently ranked No. 3 in the WBC welterweight rankings, a leap to super middleweight would require a major adjustment. Nevertheless, a win over Eubank Jr. would elevate Benn into elite conversations across multiple divisions. While Benn has reiterated his plan to return to welterweight to pursue world title aspirations, the prospect of a blockbuster clash with Canelo may prove too compelling to ignore.
