The Chicago Cubs tied their series against the Toronto Blue Jays with a victory, but the win was overshadowed by an unfortunate incident involving Miguel Amaya. In a bittersweet return to the lineup, Amaya picked up an injury that could impact his season.
Amaya suffered a mishap while running to first base after a hit; he stumbled dramatically upon reaching the bag and required immediate medical attention. As doctors examined him, Amaya had to leave the field in a vehicle due to the severity of his injury, visibly upset and in tears.
This setback came during his first game back following a stint on the 60-day injured list (IL) due to a previous injury. Cubs’ manager Craig Counsell updated the media, revealing details of the injury.
Despite the scare, there is some relief, as the X-ray results came back negative, only indicating an ankle sprain. Amaya will need a few days of rest, after which he is expected to rejoin the Cubs without a prolonged absence, much to the concern of the anxious fan base.
Amaya’s previous injury
Before this latest incident, Amaya had missed a substantial portion of the regular season due to an oblique injury. His last game before this injury was on May 24th, and he spent the subsequent 60 days recovering. Over the 2025 season, Amaya appeared in just 27 games, a limited showing for a player of his caliber.

In his absence, the Cubs relied on other catchers to lead the team through the season. Carson Kelly stepped up during this period, helping the team manage various matchups and instilling confidence amidst Amaya’s absence.
Amaya’s brief but promising performance
During his short return, Amaya went 1-for-3 at the plate in Wednesday night’s game against the Blue Jays and recorded 10 putouts against 25 batters, providing a boost to the Cubs’ lineup. That is until his unfortunate injury placed him back on the IL.
Fans are now eagerly awaiting an official report on his recovery timeline, as the Cubs aim to solidify their postseason berth. Currently, Chicago sits second in the National League Central standings, holding a four-game lead over third-place Cincinnati Reds and trailing the first-place Milwaukee Brewers by ten games.
