Eugenio Suárez is generating plenty of buzz lately after being linked to a potential trade package involving the New York Yankees. But beyond the possibility of joining a new team, Suárez is also on the verge of making Major League Baseball history.
If Suárez is traded during the current season, he would become the first player in MLB history to be moved midseason after hitting 35 home runs. The Diamondbacks‘ All-Star third baseman reached that milestone on July 20, launching two home runs in a memorable performance that helped Arizona complete a sweep of the Cardinals.
“No player in MLB history has been traded in-season after reaching 35 home runs. Diamondbacks All-Star third baseman Eugenio Suárez, who just hit his 35th homer, could very well be the 1st,” Bob Nightengale posted on X.
Are the Yankees the only team in on Suárez?
So far, the Yankees have been the team most heavily linked to Suárez. However, on the July 18 episode of MLB Now, Jon Heyman mentioned the Cubs as another potential fit, calling Suárez a “perfect” match to fill their need at third base.
Several teams—including the Yankees, Cubs, Padres, and Mets—are aggressively seeking to boost their offense ahead of the postseason push. That makes a power bat like Suárez’s an intriguing target as the trade deadline nears.
In the heart of the home run race
Suárez currently ranks third in MLB’s home run leaderboard, sitting ahead of big names like Shohei Ohtani and Kyle Schwarber. The top two spots are held by Cal Raleigh and Aaron Judge, who sits just one homer ahead of Suárez at 36. Raleigh, the Mariners’ slugger and recent Home Run Derby champion, currently leads the race.
