Nick Kurtz had a night to remember as the Athletics crushed the Astros 15-3 on the road to take Game 2 of the series. But what truly stood out wasn’t just the score—it was Kurtz’s stat line, something MLB had never seen before.
It wasn’t just the four home runs that put Kurtz in the history books. It was everything he did during the 66th game of his career, contributing nearly half of the A’s total runs against Houston.
“Never in baseball’s 150-year history has a player finished a game with at least six hits, six runs and eight RBIs until Nick Kurtz tonight,” reported ESPN’s Jeff Passan on X. “His 19 total bases tie Shawn Green’s single-game record—and Kurtz had one more RBI. There’s a genuine argument it is the best game ever.”
Kurtz reacted to his historic performance with humility
In a humble tone, setting aside his stellar performance, Kurtz insisted he never expected so many remarkable things to happen in a single MLB game, let alone dreamed of it. So far this year, he has hit 23 home runs.
“It still really hasn’t set in that it actually just happened. A game like that is stuff that you don’t even dream about, because it doesn’t really happen,” Kurtz said. “It’s just an unbelievable feeling. Glad we got the win, obviously. That performance was awesome.”
Four home runs in one game
It’s a rare sight in Major League Baseball when a player hits four home runs in a single game, but 2025 has already seen it happen twice—first with Eugenio Suárez and now with Kurtz. The last time two players recorded four-homer games in the same season was back in 2017, when J.D. Martinez and Scooter Gennett both did it.
