Alex Cora was ejected without hesitation in the 5th inning of the game between the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Angels after confronting an umpire over a recent double play that went against his team between third and second base.
This marks the second consecutive time Alex Cora has been ejected, with the first occurring against the Giants in Sunday’s series finale on June 22. The Red Sox also lost that game, just as they fell to the Angels 9-5 in this latest contest.
Cora’s protests proved futile, as the Angels executed the play perfectly. The Red Sox are now mired in a three-game losing streak, holding a 40-40 record in fourth place in the AL East. They still have a couple of games remaining in this series against the Angels.
Alex Cora’s Ejection Count Climbs
Cora currently has a total of 20 career ejections. In the ongoing 2025 MLB season, he has been ejected four times, tying his totals from the 2022 and 2023 seasons, where he also accumulated four ejections in each. With a significant portion of the regular season remaining, it’s likely he could reach five ejections this year.
Beyond ejections, Cora has initiated 14 challenges this season, with half of them being overturned, giving him a 54% success rate when utilizing challenges. His highest percentage was in 2024, at 70.8% across 24 challenges.
Cora’s Tenure with the Red Sox
With their 40-40 record, the Red Sox are in a precarious position and need to improve. Under Cora’s leadership, the team has only made two postseason appearances, most recently in 2021. At their current pace, a playoff berth seems unlikely. The 2024 season marked the first time since 2021 that Cora finished a year with a winning record.
