The Phoenix Suns wrapped up their season in disappointment, finishing 11th in the Western Conference and out of the NBA playoff picture for the first time since 2019-20. The underwhelming campaign led to the firing of head coach Mike Budenholzer and has sparked rumors of a possible departure for the team’s superstar, Kevin Durant.
Durant’s future with the Suns has been a topic of speculation before. Ahead of the trade deadline, there was significant buzz about a potential reunion with the Golden State Warriors. However, the Warriors ultimately acquired Jimmy Butler after Durant declined the opportunity to return.
Following the Suns’ subpar season, rumors of Durant’s exit have only gained traction. The speculation intensified after Durant responded to a post on X (formerly Twitter) from Forbes NBA reporter Shane Young. In his post, Young expressed gratitude to Durant for their time working together, implying the possibility of a team change.
“Shane, I appreciate your approach to your work, u made basketball convos fun and easy,” Durant replied. “Great working with u brother and I appreciate the kind words”. The response quickly grabbed fans’ attention, with many begging Durant to join their teams while others pleaded for him to stay in Phoenix.

Suns reportedly open to trade talks for Durant
Adding to the uncertainty, ESPN insider Shams Charania reported that the Suns are open to trade discussions involving Durant. The team is also reportedly evaluating the future of Bradley Beal, who failed to meet expectations this season.

Durant’s value to the franchise was evident throughout the season. The Suns went 33-29 with Durant in the lineup but struggled significantly in his absence, going just 3-17.
Rich Paul weighs in on Durant’s next move
While Durant’s next destination remains uncertain, NBA agent Rich Paul, who represents LeBron James, emphasized that any team looking to acquire Durant must have championship aspirations.
“Whichever team wants to add a [Kevin Durant] at this stage in his career has to be looking to win a championship,” Paul said, via NBA on ESPN. For now, Durant’s future remains a hot topic as the offseason unfolds, with Suns fans anxiously waiting to see if their star will stay or move on to chase another title elsewhere.
