In a revelation that shakes the foundations of the franchise, Dallas Mavericks minority owner Mark Cuban has openly expressed his displeasure with the trade that sent NBA star Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. His comments highlight a clear discrepancy between the vision of the previous management and the current one, led by general manager Nico Harrison.
The Mavericks’ current situation has left fans with a bitter taste. Anthony Davis’ injury and Kyrie Irving’s absence for the rest of the season have deepened the crisis, while the Lakers, with Doncic in their lineup, enjoy an 8-2 record and are positioned as the second seed in the Western Conference. Cuban’s frustration is understandable, and the shadow of Doncic’s trade looms large over the franchise.
In an interview with WFAA, Cuban did not hide his frustration as he reflected on the transaction that sent Doncic to the Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis. “Yeah, of course (I was upset). And I’ve said this before: if the Mavs are going to trade Luka, that’s one thing. Just get a better deal. No disrespect to Anthony Davis, but I still firmly believe this would be a different conversation if we had gotten four unprotected first-round picks, Anthony Davis, and Max Christie.”
His statement underscores the perception that Dallas failed to maximize the value of Luka Doncic, a player widely regarded as one of the best in the league. Additionally, Cuban addressed whether he would have made the trade himself.

“I’m not going to go there; it doesn’t even matter. It doesn’t matter… You’re going to make mistakes. I think the biggest challenge that the Mavs have right now is that there’s nobody really going out there to communicate. And it’s not so much what you do; it’s how you communicate about why you do what you do.”

Luka Doncic’s valuation and insufficient return
Cuban’s main criticism focuses on the valuation of Luka Doncic and the return Dallas received. The suggestion of a package that included four unprotected first-round picks, Anthony Davis, and Max Christie reflects the perception that Dallas did not maximize the value of its star player. The disparity in the performance of both franchises since the trade has intensified the debate over Dallas’ decision.
Communication and transparency of Mavericks’ management
Cuban also pointed out the lack of communication and transparency from the current administration. “I think the biggest challenge that the Mavs have right now is that there’s nobody really going out there to communicate. And it’s not so much what you do; it’s how you communicate about why you do what you do.”
