Caleb Williams took the starting snaps during the Chicago Bears preseason game against the Buffalo Bills. While he didn’t play much, he did take part on what was an easy win for the team. His head coach Ben Johnson was very clear on what Williams did on the field for them. In fact, two words were enough.
“Big-time throws,” were Ben Johnson words when he described Williams’ outing. The quarterback only played an offensive series were he completed six out of 10 throws for 107 and a touchdown. Johnson also said Caleb made stuff “to keep that drive going, and some explosive plays there, so it was good — it was good to see.”
The Bears dominated Buffalo and won the game 38-0 in a surprising shutout. Even after Williams went to the bench, the team looked great with Tyson Bagent and Austin Reed.
Williams needed a good outing
Caleb Williams didn’t have the best rookie season and with Ben Johnson’s arrival, the pressure of delivering with an offensive mastermind as coach has piled up. All eyes have been on Williams during training camps, where he has had mixed results.

Johnson’s playbook is not an easy one to learn and adapt to, but Williams made the most of it against the Bills. It remains to be seen whether he can maintain a productive offense when playing the whole game, but his appearance vs. Bills was more positive than negative for sure.

Williams is looking to write history this season
It’s maybe one of the most infamous records in the NFL, but the Chicago Bears had never seen a quarterback of theirs reach the 4,000-passing yards mark. Last season, Williams racked up 3,541 yards. By his average of 208.3 yards per game, he would’ve needed three more games.
To reach 4,000 yards, Williams needs to average 235.3 yards per game, which is not even a crazy number to aim at. For instance, 10 quarterbacks surpassed that average, though due to played games, only six surpassed the passing yards treshold. With Ben Johnson calling plays, Williams want to erase the Bears’ curse.
