One of the teams with the highest expectations heading into the upcoming NFL season is undoubtedly the Chicago Bears. Led by Caleb Williams and with the arrival of Ben Johnson as the new head coach, the Windy City franchise is looking to make a statement in the NFC North.
The biggest news of the day came on the offensive side of the ball, as a new face was seen practicing alongside what could be his future teammates heading into the upcoming season.
Jamaal Williams, former teammate of Jared Goff with the Detroit Lions, was seen training under Ben Johnson’s guidance. The veteran running back could eventually become a key weapon for Caleb Williams moving forward.
The news was confirmed by NFL insider Adam Schefter, who reported the intriguing development at the Bears’ facilities through his official account on X (formerly Twitter).

Jamaal Williams #30 of the Detroit Lions warms up prior to the game against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field on January 08, 2023 in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
“Former Lions running back Jamaal Williams worked out today for the Chicago Bears,” the insider reported via @AdamSchefter. It’s worth noting that Williams played his most recent season with the New Orleans Saints. Although he didn’t post his best numbers, he became a free agent afterward.

The Jamaal Williams–Ben Johnson connection
Ben Johnson and Jamaal Williams have a strong connection from their time with the Detroit Lions. As the offensive coordinator, Johnson oversaw Williams’ career-best season in 2022, where Williams led the league with 17 rushing touchdowns. This history of success together proves their working relationship is very effective.
This shared success is a key reason Williams could join the Chicago Bears. Now the Bears’ head coach, Johnson needs players who understand and can execute his offensive system. Williams’ proven success under Johnson makes him an ideal fit to add depth and a veteran presence to the Bears’ running back group.
For the RB, a reunion with Johnson offers a chance to get his career back on track after a less productive season elsewhere. Johnson’s system in Detroit gave Williams a clear role as a powerful, downhill runner, a role in which he thrived. Their established trust and understanding make Chicago a perfect potential landing spot for Williams.
