Despite the rumors and conflicting reports that positioned Shedeur Sanders as the frontrunner to be selected in the first round of the NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers, head coach Mike Tomlin‘s team surprised many by choosing Oregon defensive tackle Derrick Harmon.

With the uncertainty surrounding a potential arrival of Aaron Rodgers and a roster with gaps both on defense and at the quarterback position, many believed Sanders was a logical choice for Tomlin — especially considering the potential shown by the young former Colorado Buffaloes star.

However, despite all kinds of debates, head coach Tomlin has been clear in expressing the main reason why the selection of Harmon prevailed over Sanders at the 21st overall pick in the first round of the draft for the Steelers.

Tomlin’s reasons for selecting Harmon

“Extreme urgency to be quite honest. There’s no substitute for young talent. You don’t have a chance to field a quality defense unless you’re stout up front. [Harmon] is a guy who has the opportunity to look toward the likes of Cam Hayward and put his hand in that pile and be a significant contributor for years to come,” Tomlin explained via the team’s website.

The impact of Harmon’s pick

The decision to draft Harmon reflects the Steelers’ strategy to solidify their defense as the foundation for future success by addressing an immediate need. With this addition, Pittsburgh aims to improve its ability to stop the run and apply pressure on opposing quarterbacks in the next season.

The selection of Harmon could be interpreted as a sign of confidence in the potential arrival of a veteran quarterback like Rodgers. It shows that the Steelers trust their current quarterback options or plan to address that need in later rounds of the draft or through other avenues.
