AJ Dillon has officially joined the Philadelphia Eagles for the 2025 NFL season, and he has wasted no time addressing the competition in the backfield. The former Packers running back has now made something clear to Saquon Barkley about the RB1 role.
The Eagles have been very active in free agency, working to strengthen their roster. While the NFC East club has seen several departures, they have also welcomed key additions to maintain one of the most star-studded teams in the NFL.
One of their latest signings is AJ Dillon, who joins Philadelphiaâs backfield to provide depth and support. Now, the former Packers running back has addressed the competition for the starting role with a clear message to Saquon Barkley.
AJ Dillon speaks on RB1 competition with Saquon Barkley
Saquon Barkley played a pivotal role in the Eaglesâ championship run last season, proving to be the focal point of their rushing attack. However, given his heavy workload, the team saw the need to add another capable running back to help share the load.
Thatâs where AJ Dillon comes in. The former Green Bay rusher signed with the Eagles this offseason, bringing a powerful, downhill running style that complements Barkleyâs dynamic playmaking ability.

Despite the potential for competition, Dillon has made it clear that he understands his role in Philadelphia. When asked about it, the running back stated that he joined the team to support Barkley, not to take his job.
âIâm just excited to go out there every time, make the most out of every opportunity,â Dillon said. âIf youâre a football fan, you know about the Eaglesâ offensive line, and so Iâm definitely excited to meet them first, and then get out there and compete with those guys, run behind them, earn their trust.â
Will AJ Dillon be the Eaglesâ RB2?
For now, it appears that AJ Dillon will be positioned behind Saquon Barkley on the depth chart. However, the team currently lists him as the RB3, meaning he still has time to compete for the RB2 role.
