The Indianapolis Colts have added quarterback Daniel Jones in the offseason, setting up a competition with Anthony Richardson to see who will secure the starting position for the 2025 NFL season. In this context, the team’s general manager made his perspective clear.

Chris Ballard’s goal is to manage the Colts’ roster in a way that brings back the expectation of competing for a deep playoff run next season. It won’t be easy, but Indianapolis is making swift moves, and the arrival of Jones could yield results throughout the year.

Jones signed a one-year contract worth $14 million, with a value of up to $17.7 million, including incentives. It’s clear he’s coming in to compete for the starting position. His presence could pose a threat to Richardson’s aspirations in his third season as a pro. However, Ballard doesn’t see it that way.

Colts’ GM Ballard’s challenging message

“Between Daniel and Anthony, you’re going to see a really good competition. It’s going to be a spirited competition, but I also think it’s going to be one where they help each other to grow too,” GM Ballard said in an interview at Behind the Colts Show, produced by the Indianapolis franchise.

“And so we thought Daniel’s skill set and Anthony’s skill set, there’s a lot of similarities there. So offensively, I think that’s going to help our offensive staff, so OK, we don’t have to make these wholesale changes with one guy or the other,” he said.
