The Houston Texans can breathe a little easier—C.J. Gardner-Johnson is not expected to miss the entire season. That’s a major sigh of relief for fans hoping the team can build on last year’s playoff run.

According to the latest report, Gardner-Johnson did not suffer significant knee damage. Early tests showed his ACL is intact, meaning he likely won’t require a lengthy recovery. Additional evaluations are still pending to confirm the extent of the injury.

“Good news for the #Texans: Safety C. J. Gardner-Johnson, who was carted off in practice today, did not tear his ACL, sources say. He’s undergoing more tests, but initial tests have provided good news,” reported Ian Rapoport on X.

Gardner-Johnson’s Contract Details

Gardner-Johnson is under a two-year deal with the Texans. He’s set to earn $7.5 million this season. While there’s a potential out in his contract for 2026, if he completes next NFL season, he’ll receive an additional $1.3 million.

As a veteran defender and reigning Super Bowl champion, Gardner-Johnson brings leadership and proven production. Last season with the Eagles, he recorded 59 combined tackles—his third-best season in that category.

Backup Plan Concerns

If Gardner-Johnson had been ruled out, one of the top in-house options was rookie Jaylen Reed, who had been turning heads in camp with multiple interceptions. Unfortunately, Reed suffered a lower leg injury last week and is expected to miss several weeks.
