The Boston Bruins have officially extended Don Sweeney’s contract as general manager, securing his services through the end of the 2027-28 NHL season, the team announced Tuesday.
Sweeney, 58, has completed 10 seasons at the helm since his appointment on May 20, 2015. During his tenure, Boston has posted an impressive 458-233-91 record, tying for the league’s best point total (1,007) and points percentage (.644) over that span.
“I am very appreciative to (owner) Charlie (Jacobs), the entire Jacobs family, and to (president) Cam (Neely) for their continued trust and support,” Sweeney said, according to NHL.com. “It’s an honor to be part of a franchise with such a storied history and passionate fan base. I fully understand and embrace the responsibility that comes with this role. Our fans have high expectations for this team, and so do I.“
Sweeney, whose new contract reflects the organization’s long-term confidence in his leadership, made clear that expectations remain high within the front office. He added: “The collective goal is to build a team that makes Bruins fans proud and ultimately brings another Stanley Cup back to Boston.” The statement served not only as a reaffirmation of his commitment, but also as a pointed reminder to the rest of the league: Boston remains focused on returning to championship contention.

Bruins: A decade of contention and a vision for the future
Under Sweeney’s leadership, the Bruins have reached the Stanley Cup Playoffs in eight of ten seasons, including a run to Game 7 of the 2019 Final, where they fell to the St. Louis Blues. However, postseason success has been elusive since, with the team failing to advance past the second round over the last five years.

Following a disappointing 33-39-10 campaign that saw the Bruins finish at the bottom of the Atlantic Division, the organization parted ways with head coach Jim Montgomery in November. Joe Sacco took over on an interim basis, guiding the team to a 25-30-7 finish.
Bruins president’ praises to Sweeney
Despite recent struggles, Bruins president Cam Neely praised Sweeney’s direction. “Don has guided this franchise through a challenging stretch with purpose and a long-term outlook,” Neely said. “His trade deadline decisions and ongoing coaching search reflect a commitment to building a contender. I believe in the plan he’s executing and am excited for what lies ahead. In Boston, our standard is championships.“
Sweeney’s resume beyond Bruins
Sweeney’s accomplishments extend beyond the NHL regular season. He was named NHL General Manager of the Year in 2019 and recently served as GM for Team Canada at the 4 Nations Face-Off, helping secure a 3-2 overtime win over the U.S. in Boston. He will join Doug Armstrong as an assistant GM for Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina.
