After a quiet offseason lacking major signings or blockbuster trades, the Vancouver Canucks finally made headlines early Tuesday by bringing back a familiar face. The team re-signed winger Vitali Kravtsov, a former top prospect who spent the last two seasons in the KHL with Chelyabinsk Traktor.
Kravtsov, now 25, is returning to Vancouver on a one-year, two-way contract, aiming to reestablish himself in the NHL after recording a breakout campaign overseas. His signing marks the club’s first notable roster addition since acquiring Evander Kane in July.
“Vitali had a strong season in the KHL and was an impact player for his team,” said GM Patrik Allvin, according to Canucks reporter Rob Williams. “In his two seasons in Russia, he has worked hard on his game, and we look forward to seeing where Vitali is at when he comes to training camp in Penticton.”
Why did the Canucks push to re-sign Kravtsov?
Kravtsov delivered a career-best performance in Russia, notching 27 goals and 31 assists for 58 points in 66 games, ranking him among the top 10 KHL players in both goals and points. The Canucks believe his offensive upside and development abroad were worth betting on.
Allvin’s praise reflects a renewed belief in Kravtsov’s potential — one that may not have fully materialized during his previous NHL stints, but still holds promise heading into training camp.
