The Washington Capitals saw their playoff hopes vanish Thursday night after a 3-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 5 at Capital One Arena, ending their postseason journey in front of a stunned home crowd. The defeat concluded what had been a promising campaign, one that blended seasoned leadership with a rising core of younger talent.

Although the Capitals tied the game in the opening period on a goal by Anthony Beauvillier, they were ultimately outmatched. Andrei Svechnikov delivered the decisive goal for Carolina with under two minutes to play, capitalizing on a quick transition led by Sean Walker. An empty-netter by Seth Jarvis sealed the outcome. Goaltender Logan Thompson admitted postgame he never saw Svechnikov’s shot, taking full responsibility for the loss.

As attention now shifts to the offseason, Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery was asked about Alex Ovechkin’s performance and whether retirement might be on the horizon. “I know this series, the stats won’t be flattering,” Carbery said. “I thought ‘O’ was great in playoffs.”

Ovechkin’s retirement

The question of retirement has followed Ovechkin more closely over the past two seasons, particularly after consecutive early exits from the playoffs. But Carbery was direct in his response when asked about Ovechkin’s future: My understanding is he’s under contract. So he’ll be back next year.”

Ovechkin’s comments and commitment

In fact, during a recent appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, the Russian star made his stance clear: “I’m not retiring. I have one more year, and we’ll see what’s gonna happen. I love being around the boys, and as long as I can, I will try to stick around and put my great body in the NHL.”

Despite scoring just once in the five-game series against Carolina, Ovechkin tallied five goals across the postseason—most of them coming during the Capitals’ first-round win over Montreal. His leadership and presence remain central to the team’s identity, but the long-term outlook will inevitably invite more scrutiny with each passing season.
