NHL News: Flames reportedly share new update on Nazem Kadri’s future amid trade market needs

The Calgary Flames have addressed the recent speculation suggesting that forward Nazem Kadri could be used as a trade piece in a potential deal to bring in a second-line center ahead of the 2025–26 NHL season.

The Calgary Flames are at a defining point this offseason as they assess how to strengthen their offensive lineup, with Nazem Kadri remaining a central figure in those plans. The franchise’s front office has now given a fresh signal regarding the forward’s future.

Kadri is under contract through 2029 with a $7 million annual cap hit, making him both a valuable asset and a challenge when it comes to managing critical salary cap space, especially if the team looks to bring in younger talent. The big question in Calgary is what happens to the veteran former Toronto Maple Leafs player if the team targets another key addition.

In recent days, speculation has suggested that the Flames could consider moving Kadri in exchange for a younger star, but various reports indicate that Calgary has no intention of sending him away to just any team. That stance appears firm, even in a scenario where the team is actively exploring trade options.

Flames provide clarity on Kadri’s future

NHL insider David Pagnotta shared a new update on the Flames’ current thinking regarding their top-line forward. “Calgary… they’re another club that’s still looking for a 2C; now for them to move out Kadri… doesn’t make a whole lot of sense unless it’s a hockey trade,” he said. His analysis suggests that while the team could be open to the idea of a swap, such a move doesn’t seem likely at this point.

Kadri trade rumors still swirling

Despite persistent rumors linking Kadri to teams like the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens, the message from within the locker room remains consistent. The Flames are focused on keeping Kadri with hopes of boosting their competitiveness and avoiding another playoff miss like last season.

While trade rumors have often emerged due to past performance or sentimental connections, particularly in Toronto, Calgary is not in a hurry to part ways with their veteran center. His leadership and experience remain a foundational piece of the roster. Still, with a long offseason ahead, anything could happen.
