The Seattle Kraken made a calculated move on Day 1 of NHL free agency, agreeing to terms with defenseman Ryan Lindgren on a four-year contract worth $18 million (AAV $4.5 million). The signing flew under the radar amid more high-profile headlines but could pay significant dividends for Seattle’s defensive structure.

Lindgren, 27, spent last season with the New York Rangers, where he posted 15 points, a +11 rating, and averaged over 18 minutes of ice time across 76 games. Known more for his defensive contributions than offensive output, the left-shot blueliner is seen as a dependable and gritty presence in his own zone.

The signing was first reported by NHL insider Pierre LeBrun, who confirmed via X: ā€œSeattle Kraken have signed UFA D Ryan Lindgren to a four-year x $4.5M AAV deal.ā€

What Lindgren brings to Seattle’s blue line

Lindgren isn’t a flashy player, but that’s exactly why he fits. His game is built on fundamentals: positioning, physical play, shot blocking, and a relentless commitment to the penalty kill. These qualities complement more offensively-inclined defensemen like Vince Dunn, providing balance to Seattle’s top four.

Seattle’s front office clearly values character and consistency, and Lindgren offers both. His postseason experience with the Rangers, combined with his age and durability, make him an asset the Kraken can build around as they look to push further into playoff contention.

The move also signals that Seattle is preparing for a more competitive phase. Rather than swing for high-risk stars, they’re opting for reliability—players who can anchor a defense and elevate team toughness in tight, physical games.
