After suffering an injury during the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/new-york-rangers">New York Rangers</a>’ 5-4 win over the Philadelphia Flyers, J.T. Miller faces a big setback in his journey to the 2026 Olympics. However, reports suggest his spot on Team USA’s roster may be guaranteed.



His first NHL season as the Rangers’ captain has been anything but smooth sailing for <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/jt-miller">Miller</a>. New York has struggled to find consistency, and the fanbase has grown anxious over the team’s struggles on home ice. Finally, just when the Blueshirts managed to secure a divisional win at Madison Square Garden, Miller exited the game with an injury that will keep him sidelined. 



Still, reports around the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> indicate the latest health concern won’t play a role in Team USA’s decision. The fact that Rangers head coach Mike Sullivan will be behind the bench for the Americans may have something to do with that.

If last year under Peter Laviolette wasn’t dramatic enough, the Broadway Blueshirts are now reliving their traumas. Losing to the crestfallen, still-grieving Canucks by a score of 3–0 at home was only the latest item on a long list of massive letdowns for New York. 



For some reason, most of them take place in Manhattan. The Rangers look quite different on the road but can’t figure themselves out when playing in the Big Apple. That uncertainty and wandering style isn’t limited to the ice, though. Zibanejad has seemingly lost track of the city he lives in by being late to a team meeting, which led to him being healthy scratched recently. Now, the 32-year-old forward has set the record straight.



“It’s my 10th season (with the Rangers). I know what the (traffic) challenges are and whatnot, but it was an unfortunate situation,” Zibanejad explained, via The Athletic’s Vince Mercogliano on X. “I got stuck… I’m just hoping everyone in that accident was fine. But rules are rules and I was late, so there’s not much else to say, honestly.”

While Zibanejad opted to discuss the details behind his late arrival, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/mike-sullivan">Sullivan</a> had previously issued a candid statement when asked about his decision to sideline the veteran winger for one game.

After not attending one of those meetings, the New York Rangers coach decided to take disciplinary actions against a huge name on the roster where JT Miller also plays.



According to Vince Mercogliano of The Athletic, Mika Zibanejad won’t play tonight. Mike Sullivan also opened up about it. “There are logistical challenges the city presents” that caused Zibanejad’s lateness, Sullivan said. He then added, “Mika understands the importance of the rules that we all expect of one another.”



Sullivan said Zibanejad “feels terribly. The one thing about Mika is he’s an honest person. He’s a great human being and he takes responsibility for it.” As long as we know, one game will be enough for Mika to learn not to skip <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/new-york-rangers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rangers</a> meetings.



<h2>Will this affect the Rangers?</h2>



Not counting with Zibanejad is of course a hit to the team. He has played 33 games and scored 25 points so far this season. The Swedish star is the third-best scorer on the Rangers. In fact, he has scored five more points than <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/jt-miller" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">JT Miller</a>.

In the last five games, Zibanejad has scored five points. He has been great lately even if the team is 2-3 in that span, although three of those games were overtime matches. Two of those were losses.

If the Swede was new to the city or country, one could understand the “logistical challenges” the city presents. However, Zibanejad has played for the Rangers since 2016. It’s been a decade where he’s known every single place in New York City.



Besides, no other player on the roster was late, so it’s a tough one to believe. Mike Sullivan did show, however, he won’t take lightly any sign of uncommittment to the team.

Nobody expected Anaheim to compete this season, yet somehow someway, the Ducks are currently sitting in a playoff spot.



As the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/anaheim-ducks">Ducks</a> head East to take on the Rangers at the Madison Square Garden, Kreider and Trouba were asked about their NHL background. On that note, Kreider dropped a sincere admission on Trouba’s rebirthing in Orange County.

“Last year’s kind of a blur. The difference? [Trouba] doesn’t have the weight of the world on his shoulders,” Kreider stated on Trouba, via The Orange County Register. “It’s an incredibly hard thing to be the captain in that city. It’s an incredible honor. There’s a lot of responsibility that goes along with that. And I think being able to come out here and just play without worrying about some of those things might make it a little bit easier.”

Since being traded to Anaheim on Dec. 6, 2024, Trouba has appeared in 85 games, registering 6 goals, 15 assists, and 21 points. His production has truly improved in the 2025-26 NHL campaign. Last season, the former Rangers’ captain was still being affected by the psychological factors behind such a sudden change. In the blink of an eye, Trouba went from being a captain in Manhattan to being the new guy in a locker room more than 2,700 miles away in Anaheim.

Though Trouba never expected the organization he captained to ship him away in such a fashion, there were signs indicating a rift between the front office and the captain. Kreider’s trade came as bigger surprise. 



“We’re having fun on the ice and smiling, I just think we’re a little more relaxed being out of the pressure or whatever you want to call it,” Jacob Trouba admitted about the former Rangers on the Ducks. “We’re just having a lot more fun.”



Despite boasting the third-most goals in Rangers history (326), Kreider was traded in the offseason with two seasons left on his seven-year, $45.5 million deal. Still, it wasn’t the worst thing in the world as Kreider joined former teammates Trouba and Frank Vatrano. Now, the chemistry is paying off, and the Ducks hope to prove it as they take on several familiar faces in New York City.

According to Elliotte Friedman on the “32 Thoughts” podcast, Gustafsson’s name has been circulating in New York’s discussions as a potential solution while Fox is out. “One of the names I’ve kind of heard thrown around was Erik Gustafsson, which would make some sense. He’s in the American Hockey League, and they know him,” Friedman said.

Being short a man is never easy to overcome in the NHL. The Rangers know that all too well, as they’re currently without four players due to injury (Adam Fox, Jonathan Quick, Matt Rempe, and Adam Edstrom). However, losing a goaltender is even tougher to navigate.

For the Blueshirts, they suddenly found themselves with a one-man crew in net. Shesterkin could feel the pressure—either he shut the door or his teammates could wave their season goodbye early. With his back against the wall, there was only one path forward, and he made sure New York never missed its backup goalie for a second.



Over the last five games—when New York had no Plan B in net—Shesterkin has averaged 25.8 saves per game, allowed just 2.2 goals per game, and posted a .918 save percentage. Needless to say, Sullivan and the Rangers are in safe hands while Quick continues his recovery.

Captain <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/jt-miller">J.T. Miller</a> emphasized that the team’s identity and mindset have been central to recent improvements. “When we play to our identity, we’re really hard to play against and really hard to beat — especially when we put the puck on the net and play with a lead,” Miller said, according to The New York Post.

Miller added, “You have to move your feet and [play with] physicality. Two things that are accomplishable. When we play like that, we seem to play faster and the game opens up. It’s a big part of our identity.”

Shortly after Jonathan Quick was placed on Injured Reserve (IR) with a lower-body injury, the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/new-york-rangers">Rangers</a> called up rookie netminder Dylan Garand from the AHL Hartford Wolf Pack. Most fans in The Big Apple expected the former fourth-round in 2020 to make his NHL debut in the 2025-26 campaign. 



However, that has been stopped on its tracks. Sullivan and his staff sent Garand back to the minors, calling up veteran Spencer Martin instead. The decision caught fans by surprise, and the head coach has now explained the reasoning behind his verdict.



“We don’t want anybody sitting on the sidelines too long,” Sullivan stated, via The Athletic’s Vince Mercogliano on X. “We want guys playing, and that’s an important aspect that we try to manage all the time. Garand has played 11 games for the Wolf Pack in the AHL. Despite his skill set, he hasn’t been able to keep the team afloat. Considered Hartford’s starter, Garand currently holds a losing record this season, with six regulation losses, two overtime losses, and just three wins. 



Through 20 games, the Wolf Pack have a 7-9-4 record, placing them sixth out of eight teams in the Atlantic Division. The organization in the Insurance Capital of the World is coming off a disappointing 2024–25 campaign in which it missed the Calder Cup Playoffs. This time around, the Wolf Pack hope to get back on track, but so far Hartford has had no luck.

Putting pucks in deep and being aggressive on the forecheck has proven a recipe for success for many teams across the league. For skilled players, it can feel like a grueling, limiting dome being put over their game. If they find themselves with possession in the neutral zone, they must make a decision in a matter of seconds: hold on to the puck—risking a turnover that puts their team in a compromising position—or take the easy option, which is simply putting the puck in deep. 



However, small risks have small rewards. Constantly dumping the puck comes at the expense of explosive plays. Losing Fox to what’s been reported as a week-to-week injury hurts the Rangers in more ways than one. For starters, Sullivan and company will miss the best blueliner on the roster, who can produce as good as any in both ends of the ice. In addition, being without Fox means the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/new-york-rangers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rangers</a> lose their power play quarterback. The role usually taken up by the best defenseman on the team is now up for grabs. Or rather was.

Reports suggest Fox is scheduled to return after the new year. As New York enters Christmas season in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NHL</a> without its top blueliner, it will need the rest of the defensemen on the team to step up their game.

On that note, many expected one of Scott Morrow, Braden Schneider, or Vladislav Gavrikov to take over the QB role on the top PP unit. However, Sullivan confessed that asking the blueliners to command the power play may be too much to ask out of them.

<h2>Rangers must take risks</h2>



The way the 2025–26 NHL season has gone for Sullivan and the Rangers, it seems not many things could go any worse. New York’s power play ranks 12th in the league—21.3% of success rate. 



At the moment, it’s not among the biggest topics of concern for fans in Manhattan. If anything, there is more room to dip below than to climb up for the man-advantage unit, so running a defenseman-less unit could turn more costly than beneficial.



Having five of their best forwards together on one unit could turn into a true case of putting all the eggs in one basket. The risk–reward is there for New York, but it looks like the Blueshirts know desperate times require desperate measures. Whether the decision pays off or not is a whole different story.

After being humbled at home by the Bolts, the Blueshirts head coach’s postgame remarks stood in stark contrast to Cooper’s. So far, their NHL seasons have been like day and night, and their latest comments made that perfectly clear.



Scoreboard watchers could argue that a 4-1 loss—in which the final goal came on an empty net—is far from a tragic outcome in the NHL. However, in this case, the final score doesn’t do the story of the night justice. Sullivan and the Rangers were blown out of the water by <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/jon-cooper" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cooper</a>’s Lightning. If not for Igor Shesterkin, the goal tally could’ve reached season highs. After the game, Sullivan didn’t mince words on his thoughts.



“We got outcompeted from the drop of the puck,” <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/mike-sullivan" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sullivan</a> commented per <a href="https://www.nhl.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NHL.com</a>. “There’s got to be a willingness and a want to be first to pucks, to embrace physicality. We knew the type of game it was going to be. 



“That team, they’ve got hard skill, they compete and they skate. That was the type of game it was going to be. I don’t think we had the wherewithal to match the intensity. I just feel we lost puck battles all over the rink and it’s hard to establish any sort of game that you want to play if you don’t win puck battles.”

<h2>Cooper’s postgame comment</h2>



As for Cooper and the Bolts, their stay in The Big Apple couldn’t have been any better. Coming into the campaign with sky-high hopes, the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/tampa-bay-lightning" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lightning</a> have seemingly managed to exceed expectations. After the commanding victory against the Rangers, Cooper made sure to praise his players for yet another spotless outing.

“Honestly, we’ve got a really good vibe going,” Cooper admitted. “These back-to-backs are tough. We knew they had it too, and they had a goalie that was playing both games so we thought, hopefully we could jump on them early. Fortunately, we did.”



<h2>Lightning strikes twice—and more</h2>



Tampa Bay has now won seven straight, improved to 16-7-2 (8-2-2 away) on the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NHL</a> season, and is shaping up to be the biggest threat in the Eastern Conference. Only a glance around the locker room tells everything that needs to be known about the juggernaut in Cigar City.



The Lightning boast a roster that knows what it takes to win, a head coach whose leadership is second to none, an annual Hart Trophy candidate in Nikita Kucherov, enough depth to intimidate any opponent, and a goaltender in Andrei Vasilevskiy who routinely makes saves the human body shouldn’t be capable of. Needless to say, the Bolts are for real—and they made the most of their stay in New York City to put the league on notice.

<h2>The Rangers can’t catch a break</h2>



As for the Rangers, Shesterkin is capable of shutting the door just as well as any goalie in the league. However, with the team registering the fifth-lowest goals per game and the seventh-worst shots per game—2.63 and 25.9, respectively—the Russian netminder often finds himself left hanging out to dry. That’s especially true at Madison Square Garden, where the Blueshirts are 2-8-1 this season and have been outscored 31-17.
