For the Blueshirts, they suddenly found themselves with a one-man crew in net. Shesterkin could feel the pressure—either he shut the door or his teammates could wave their season goodbye early. Over the last five games—when New York had no Plan B in net—Shesterkin has averaged 25.8 saves per game, allowed just 2.2 goals per game, and posted a .918 save percentage. Needless to say, Sullivan and the Rangers are in safe hands while Quick continues his recovery.

Miller</a> emphasized that the team’s identity and mindset have been central to recent improvements. “When we play to our identity, we’re really hard to play against and really hard to beat — especially when we put the puck on the net and play with a lead,” Miller said, according to The New York Post.

“After a poor performance on Saturday [against the Lightning], I think it shows some resilience in here,” Cuylle stated after the game, via The New York Post’s Mollie Walker on X. “Just bouncing back and being able to reset. Being proud of the way we play in front of our fans is really important to all of us. I’m glad we could put out a good effort today and get the win.”

Shortly after Jonathan Quick was placed on Injured Reserve (IR) with a lower-body injury, the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/new-york-rangers">Rangers</a> called up rookie netminder Dylan Garand from the AHL Hartford Wolf Pack. Most fans in The Big Apple expected the former fourth-round in 2020 to make his NHL debut in the 2025-26 campaign. 



However, that has been stopped on its tracks. Sullivan and his staff sent Garand back to the minors, calling up veteran Spencer Martin instead. The decision caught fans by surprise, and the head coach has now explained the reasoning behind his verdict.



“We don’t want anybody sitting on the sidelines too long,” Sullivan stated, via The Athletic’s Vince Mercogliano on X. “We want guys playing, and that’s an important aspect that we try to manage all the time. Spencer’s a guy that we don’t have a lot of familiarity with. It gives us an opportunity to get to know him a bit, see him practice, things of that nature. Those are a few of the reasons why.”

While the Blueshirts would like to see what Garand can do in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> and how he holds his own against the best players in the world, timing may not be on his side right now. Moreover, Sullivan mentioned Quick could be back in the lineup sooner rather than later, which would cause Garand’s debut to make less sense.

<h2>Garand’s numbers so far in the 2025-26 AHL season</h2>



Garand has played 11 games for the Wolf Pack in the AHL. Despite his skill set, he hasn’t been able to keep the team afloat. Considered Hartford’s starter, Garand currently holds a losing record this season, with six regulation losses, two overtime losses, and just three wins. 



Through 20 games, the Wolf Pack have a 7-9-4 record, placing them sixth out of eight teams in the Atlantic Division. The organization in the Insurance Capital of the World is coming off a disappointing 2024–25 campaign in which it missed the Calder Cup Playoffs. This time around, the Wolf Pack hope to get back on track, but so far Hartford has had no luck.

<h2>Rangers must take risks</h2>



The way the 2025–26 NHL season has gone for Sullivan and the Rangers, it seems not many things could go any worse. New York’s power play ranks 12th in the league—21.3% of success rate. 



At the moment, it’s not among the biggest topics of concern for fans in Manhattan. If anything, there is more room to dip below than to climb up for the man-advantage unit, so running a defenseman-less unit could turn more costly than beneficial.



Having five of their best forwards together on one unit could turn into a true case of putting all the eggs in one basket. The risk–reward is there for New York, but it looks like the Blueshirts know desperate times require desperate measures. Whether the decision pays off or not is a whole different story.

After a 4-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes, Artemi Panarin surged back to the top of the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/new-york-rangers">New York Rangers</a>’ scoring chart with 15 points (five goals, 10 assists) in his last 11 games. His two-point performance included an assist on the game-winning goal, giving New York a 2-1 lead late in the second period.



J.T. Miller, returning from an upper-body injury, logged a season-high three-game point streak and provided a stabilizing presence on ice, showing how his confidence and leadership influence the Rangers’ performance.



Captain Miller, Panarin’s linemate Wednesday night, spoke about the winger’s impact: “Obviously, it’s a big goal at the end of the second, on the road, having that lead going in, it gives you all that little bit more confidence…“ He said, according to The New York Post.



He added: “Those are situations where we need our guys to step up and make a play right there, to give us a little breathing room in that game. And that’s what he did. It was nice to see him making plays.”

<h2>Miller’s return strengthens Rangers</h2>



Miller, Panarin, and Vincent Trocheck outscored opponents 2-1 with logging 13:13 of five-on-five ice time, even though the trio was out-attempted 6-4, according to Natural Stat Trick.

Head coach <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/mike-sullivan">Mike Sullivan</a> highlighted Miller’s influence: “He’s just strong on pucks. He has a poise to how he plays the game, his confidence. I think when he’s in our lineup, we’re certainly a much better team. And I think that influence was on display today.”



<h2>Panarin leads team offense</h2>



Panarin’s recent surge underscores his role as a key offensive driver for the Rangers. His contributions alongside Miller and Trocheck mark the second game the trio skated together after being paired last week in Colorado. Panarin has five goals and 10 assists in his last 11 games, showcasing his ability to step up in crucial moments.



Defenseman Adam Fox has also been a key contributor, recording at least one assist in four straight games, tying for the fifth-longest active streak among NHL defensemen this season.

NY Rangers' Miller makes bold statement on Panarin's role amid team surge

Fans in Manhattan may not dare say it, yet, but it’s sure looking that way. After a rocky start to his tenure, it seems <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/mike-sullivan" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mike Sullivan</a> and the New York Rangers are finally starting to click. One great indicator of that might just be J.T. Miller’s latest statement in the 2025-26 NHL season.



Making his return to the lineup after a two-game absence, Miller recorded an assist during the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/new-york-rangers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rangers</a>’ visit to the Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh. However, the captain did just what captains do: wear his heart on a sleeve when addressing the rest of the team. With a very sincere comment, the 32-year-old let Sullivan and company know his thoughts on New York’s performance in the City of Oaks.



“Tonight, I don’t think we were at our best,” Miller honestly commented after the game, via The New York Post. “We found a way to win, and I thought our third was our best period. It’s funny, you go out through the first 15 games of the year, how many games we thought we should have won. This is one of those that hopefully can help even some of those out.”



While Miller—and everybody on the Rangers—will gladly take the win and move on, the captain’s comments do serve as a reminder to Sullivan and the coaching staff. The way New York is playing can work for now, but it will most likely be short-lived. Sooner or later, the Blueshirts will have to show consistency.

<h2>Rangers know they can’t win them all</h2>

Moreover, it’s impossible for a team to play at the top of their game every single outing.

The Rangers have learned that, but not without their fair share of bumps and bruises. What matters in the NHL is finding a way to walk away with points on a regular basis. It doesn’t always have to be pretty. That may be the case with New York’s latest win over <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/carolina-hurricanes" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Carolina</a>. 


 

 


As the Blueshirts’ captain, J.T. Miller, admitted, it wasn’t the best performance from the squad, but when it’s all said and done, the only thing fans will remember days from now is the big “W” next to the final score.



<h2>What Sullivan and New York needed</h2>



Following the big win on home ice against the St. Louis Blues, Sullivan’s Rangers had to prove they could keep the momentum going when hitting the road. Up to this point in the NHL season, the Broadway Blueshirts have been seemingly hexed. Either they put on embarrassing performances at home and deliver on the road, or vice versa. Having consistent production regardless of where they played seemed to be a lot to ask from New York’s fans. Perhaps that can change now.
