The Argentina national team is living one of its best generations in years. They won the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Also, they lifted the Copa America twice and claimed the Finalissima title. Lionel Scaloni played a key role in this success. His coaching talent made a major difference in the team’s rise. In addition, he blended young players with experienced ones to keep Argentina highly competitive. In this context, Scaloni made some surprising comments about a former Real Madrid player.

“We took him (Nico Paz) to Spain, we brought him to us, we were smart there. Besides, the boy was happy to come to the national team and he has a huge future… I am nobody, but if Real Madrid has the option to buy back Nico Paz I wouldn’t hesitate. I know him and he has the level, not only to play for Real Madrid but to continue growing,” stated Lionel Scaloni on Siro Lopez’s Twitch.

Nico Paz came through Real Madrid’s youth system. In the 2023–24 season, he debuted with Real Madrid Castilla. He impressed by scoring 12 goals and providing 7 assists. His performances were dominant and consistent. However, Carlo Ancelotti chose not to include him in the senior team. Because of that, Paz moved to Como in Italy. There, under Cesc Fabregas, he reached another level. He quickly became one of the best young players in the Italian league.

His strong form caught attention. As a result, Lionel Scaloni made him a regular in Argentina’s national team. This happened even though Paz was born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain. But his father, Pablo Paz, is a former Argentine international. That heritage played a key role in Nico’s decision as he chose to represent Lionel Messi’s national team.

Is Nico Paz likely to return to Real Madrid in the near future?

If there is one thing Real Madrid does well, it’s managing the careers of their young players. Instead of slowly promoting them into the senior squad, the club prefers another path. They develop their talent and transfers them to teams where they can earn regular first-division experience. This strategy may seem questionable to some, but Real Madrid have perfected it. In fact, it has become one of their most effective tools.

In August 2024, the club transferred one of its prospects to Como in Italy for $5.3 million. However, it included a buy-back clause that spans three transfer windows. This means Real Madrid can bring the player back at any point until August 2027. According to Diario Marca, the buy-back fee starts at $7.9 million. Yet it increases over time. If the club waits until 2027, the cost would rise to $9.7 million.

This decision sparked criticism, especially after Toni Kroos retired. His departure opened a clear opportunity in the midfield. Nico usually plays as an attacking midfielder. However, in the youth system, he also performed as a central midfielder under Alvaro Arbeloa. Therefore, a return remains possible. The current midfield lacks control and quality in the absence of a presence like Nico Paz. Because of this, the club may consider re-signing him as early as next season.
