The tournament’s inaugural edition was held in 2000, hosted by Brazil. That year, Corinthians—then reigning Brazilian league champions and the host nation’s representative—claimed the title. The competition wasn’t held for the next four years, but it returned in 2005 and has since become a fixture, replacing the Intercontinental Cup.

Since then, there have been 20 editions of the Club World Cup, with European teams dominating the tournament. UEFA Champions League winners have claimed the title 16 times, with Real Madrid holding the record with four trophies. The remaining four titles were won by Brazilian clubs.

The most lopsided result in tournament history occurred early in the revamped format, with Bayern Munich thrashing Auckland City 10-0 on Matchday 1 of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025.

Before that, the record was a 6-1 win by Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia over Al Jazira of the United Arab Emirates in the second round of the 2021 edition. The third-biggest margin came in 2019, when Esperance of Tunisia defeated Al Sadd of Qatar 6-2 in the fifth-place match. Rounding out the top four was Monterrey’s 5-1 victory over Al Ahly of Egypt in the 2013 fifth-place match.

The second was in 2023, the last edition before the tournament format was expanded, when Manchester City defeated Fluminense.
