Honduras have begun their 2021 Gold Cup journey on the right foot. Fabián Coito's side arrived at this competition full of hope and it has lived up to expectations so far. From now on, however, they'll have to deal with a major blow as Alberth Elis was ruled out for the remainder of the competition.

La H opened their campaign by putting four past Grenada and then defeated Panama in a hard-fought game to book a place in the quarterfinals. The Catrachos now have one pending game against Qatar to conclude the group stage.

Honduras will try to pick up from where they left off to secure the first seed in Group D, but they'll have to do so without Alberth Elis. What's worst, the Boavista winger won't return to the team in the 2021 Gold Cup.

Why was Alberth Elis ruled out for the 2021 Gold Cup?

Honduras' aspirations in the 2021 Gold Cup automatically increased due to their strong start, but now they've to deal with a huge blow. After losing Michaell Chirinos through a ruptured ligament in his right knee, they'll have to overcome another painful absence.

Alberth Elis will miss the remainder of the 2021 Gold Cup after suffering a fracture in one of the toes of his left foot. The 25-year-old had to leave the field in the half-time against Panama and went directly to the clinic, where an X-Ray was performed and confirmed the injury.

Despite it's a minor fracture, it will demand Elis around a month of recovery, which rules him out for the rest of the tournament. The Boavista forward has 10 goals in 42 appearances with Honduras and was one of the biggest stars of the team in the 2021 Gold Cup.

Unfortunately for him and the Catrachos, his participation in the Concacaf tournament was suddenly over in an early stage. From now on, Honduras will have to overcome this blow to keep on fighting for the trophy.
