One of the most highly anticipated matchups for soccer fans was set to take place on Matchday 14 of the CONMEBOL FIFA World Cup qualifiers, featuring Lionel Messi’s Argentina against Brazil in what was expected to mark Neymar Jr.’s return to the national team. However, there’s bad news—everything points to Neymar missing both qualifying matches.

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has released an official statement providing details on why Neymar will miss Brazil’s upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Alongside Neymar, defender Danilo and goalkeeper Ederson have also been ruled out.

Neymar’s absence is a major blow for a Brazilian squad that has faced heavy criticism in recent years for its lack of soccer identity and creativity on the pitch. Once a team that instilled fear in opponents, Brazil has struggled to maintain its dominance. Many hoped that Neymar’s return would help restore confidence and bring back the attacking flair that defined past generations.

Currently, Brazil sits fifth in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying standings—a rare sight in the nation’s history. With 18 points, Brazil has recorded five wins, three draws, and four losses. The teams ahead of them include Colombia (4th), Ecuador (3rd), Uruguay (2nd), and Argentina (1st).

Why is Neymar out?

In the statement released by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), Brazil head coach Dorival Júnior addressed Neymar’s situation, explaining the reasons behind his absence.

“In recent days, following the squad announcement on March 6 at 11 a.m., the Brazilian national team’s medical department, led by Dr. Rodrigo Lasmar, has been providing us with updates regarding all players, particularly Danilo (Flamengo), Neymar (Santos), and Ederson (Manchester City). After conducting evaluations, the medical staff informed us of each player’s condition,” Dorival said. Reports indicate that Neymar is dealing with a thigh edema, which will prevent him from taking part in the upcoming qualifiers.

Who are the replacements?

In addition to Neymar, Brazil will also be without Danilo and Ederson. In response, Dorival Júnior has called up replacements for each player. “As a result, we are calling up Lucas Perri (Lyon), Alex Sandro (Flamengo), and Endrick (Real Madrid),” announced Dorival Júnior.

Endrick’s selection is particularly notable, as the 18-year-old forward is widely regarded as Brazil’s next superstar. Stepping in for Neymar, one of the nation’s all-time greats, presents a massive responsibility for the young attacker. Meanwhile, veteran defender Alex Sandro returns to the national team setup.
