As the Brooklyn Nets gear up for their first preseason game against the Los Angeles Clippers, head coach Jordi Fernandez made an intriguing announcement: <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/dennis-schroder">Dennis Schroder</a> will start alongside Ben Simmons, despite both players traditionally playing the same position.



“They played together,” Fernandez said of the two point guards. “And we’re going to go into the first game of the preseason playing with two point guards, so you guys will see that, for sure.”



Schroder shared his reaction to the lineup decision with Brian Lewis of the New York Post. “When I first got here, I played with Ben in the first scrimmage,” Schroder said. “After that, we didn’t do it too much. We competed every practice against each other, and that was great just to push ourselves and try to get as many wins as possible.”



The German guard remains optimistic about sharing the floor with <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ben-simmons">Simmons</a>. “But coach decided that we’re going to start together, and we’re going to make the best out of it,” Schroder added. “He’s an All-Star-type player, so he’s going to push the ball. [He’s] unselfish.”

Schroder also praised Simmons’ contributions on both ends of the floor. “On the defensive end, [Simmons is] playing with grit. And that’s what we need here. A lot of speed. He can bring it up, I go to the corner. If not, me and him in pick-and-roll, him setting the screen or me setting the screen. I think we can do a lot of things. Today we worked on it, and we’re going to keep building from here.“

After battling a persistent back injury over the past few years, Simmons appears rejuvenated during the team’s training camp. Ahead of their preseason game against the Los Angeles Clippers, Simmons opened up about his injury struggles last season.



Whether this will be the season that Simmons leads the Nets remains to be seen, but the former All-Star was confident when asked about his current form. “I feel physically ready to play at a high level,” he said about his feelings during this training camp.

<h2>What did Ben Simmons say last year?</h2>



Being a three-time All-Star is no small feat, and with a fully fit Ben Simmons, the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/brooklyn-nets">Brooklyn Nets</a> could surprise a lot of people this season. However, the setup for this year bears similarities to the 2023-24 season, with Simmons once again emphasizing that he’s “feeling 100%.”

When asked about his health by Andscape‘s Marc J. Spears in 2023, Simmons reflected on his recovery process, saying: “I don’t think people realize how bad it was in terms of physically how I was feeling and what I was able to do on the floor. But I feel I’m at 100% now. Right now, I’m just building back to where I’m playing. I haven’t played in a while. Just taking hits and getting my body used to that.”

After two consecutive seasons cut short by back injuries, Ben Simmons’ past statements about his health have fallen short of expectations. However, following surgery on his disc in May- his second in as many years -Simmons and his medical team adopted a new rehabilitation approach that may offer better results this time around.



When asked whether fans can expect a different outcome this season, Simmons was confident: “Yeah, I think just different eyes, a different surgeon. Honestly, compared to the last surgery I feel a lot different, a lot freer. I didn’t have any setbacks throughout the process of the rehab, which is the most positive thing for me. It tells me that the surgery was successful.”

With the player set to be a starter in the 2024-25 NBA season, former Los Angeles Lakers <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/shaquille-o&apos;neal">Shaquille O’ Neil</a> gave his thoughts about him.







“<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ben-simmons" rel="sponsored nofollow">Ben</a> is sensitive, he came in with a lot of hype, but when he didn’t want to shoot in Atlanta, and he kept passing the ball, and everybody’s jumping on him, he got exposed,” Shaq said in “Big Podcast“ Big Shaq also addressed Simmons’ back injury, giving away a tough statement: “Now the back thing, I let that go the first year. I’m not letting that go three years in a row. This is 2024: You got shot, you got pills, you got treatment. I don’t want to hear it.



“He’s afraid of what people are going to say about him: he’s still in shock mode. (Simmons) didn’t play last year, and again what do you do? You say my back hurts. Everybody knows in this world that the ‘back injury’ is a thing that you can’t really check, but your back ain’t been hurting for that long. Because while you’re not playing, you’re supposed to be doing rehab” Shaq later added.

<h2>Ben Simmons’ back injury situation</h2>



Ben Simmons back injury is nothing new for <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/brooklyn-nets">Brooklyn Nets</a>: In March 2024, the point guard underwent back surgery for the second time in three years, after only being able to appear in 15 matches during last season. The setup for this season is pretty similar to the 2023-24, with the back injury issue solved, and a Simmons ready to start.

Tyrese Maxey has been named the 2023-24 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/nba">NBA</a> Most Improved Player thanks to his fantastic performances for the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/philadelphia-76ers">Philadelphia 76ers</a> throughout the year. But the truth is the guard has been on the rise for a while now.



That’s why the former first-rounder doesn’t forget about the teammates that helped him improve his game until getting this recognition from the league. Even if that means thanking the likes of Ben Simmons and <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/james-harden">James Harden</a>, who left the team on bad terms.



“I’ve learned from a lot of people,” Maxey said, via Sixers Wire. “Honestly, I go down a list. Ben (Simmons) was here, George Hill was here, guys like Danny Green was involved, but he was a leader. He was here who helped me a lot. I talked about him last night just about recovery and things like that. JH comes in, he helps me big time. Kyle Lowry, Pat Bev, those guys.”

After failing to help <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/joel-embiid">Joel Embiid</a> go the distance in two seasons, Harden was traded to the Clippers as his relationship with Daryl Morey also reached a point of no return. So fans certainly don’t have a good memory of these two players, but Maxey made it clear they’ve played a part in his growth at the franchise.

“What they all did here, they never, like, stepped on my toes,” Maxey added. “They never hated. They always tried to build me up and I just really appreciate them for that. Especially James, man. Selected with the 21st pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/tyrese-maxey">Maxey</a> went on to become a key contributor to the Sixers. With Harden gone, he was handed even more responsibility this season, and the 23-year-old didn’t let the team down.



Apart from winning the MIP award, Maxey’s outstanding level saw him make the All-Star Game for the first time in 2024. His performances this season have been impressive, averaging 25.9 points, 6.2 assists, and 3.7 rebounds while shooting 45% of his field goals with 37.3% from beyond the arc.

Now, years later, Rivers finally admitted that he was wrong to do so.

“I had a terrible press conference after that Game 7,” Rivers told ESPN. “We lost. I said something — I meant something different, but it was taken differently. That started it. Then Joel [Embiid] had a bad press conference.”

The coach added that Simmons’ divorce with the organization could’ve happened regardless. Even so, the fact that he contributed to his discontent and departure wasn’t a good look for him:



“I don’t know if the whole Ben thing was going to happen regardless, but I didn’t like me being a part of that,” Rivers admitted. “So your first thing is, how can I handle that better? How can I answer that question better?”

“This is what? My second (or) third time back, so it’s a little different now,” Simmons said. “It’s funny to me. I got grown men pissed off and yelling at me. I get to go home after this, get the win. For me, I’m all about winning, so come here, do our job, and get to go home. But it’s fun, I enjoy that. It’s not that deep, it’s sports but it comes with it, so I enjoy it.”



The former first-overall pick claimed that he was struggling mentally in Philadelphia, which is why he wasn’t able to play. Now, multiple injuries later, he’s a non-factor on a losing team.

<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ben-simmons" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ben Simmons</a> is so incredibly talented that even though he hasn’t been a good <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/nba" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NBA</a> player for years, the fans, the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/brooklyn-nets" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brooklyn Nets,</a> and even his colleagues still expect him to become an All-Star again soon.



Simmons was hyped during the offseason and admitted that he owed it to the fans to go back to being the best version of himself. He looked great in open runs — as per usual — but once again, he hasn’t been able to show that when it actually counts.



His nagging back injuries continue to keep him off the court. He’s missed his team’s past 22 games, with the Brooklyn Nets going 13-15 for the season and clearly needing his playmaking and elite defense.



Even when he was on the court, he wasn’t much of a contributor, averaging roughly 6.5 points, a career-best 10.8 rebounds, and 6.7 assists, with his team going 3-3 when he was healthy.

When asked about the status of his career, the former No. 1 pick admitted that this is probably the most frustrated he’s ever been. It’s not about holding out, leverage, money, or even mental issues this time. He really wants to be on the floor:



“It’s probably one of the most frustrating points in my career just because I wanna be out there to help my team win and compete,” Simmons told the media before the Nets- Nuggets game. “But at the end of the day, it’s one of those things that’s a part of sports. Not every game’s promised. Injuries happen. Unfortunately, it happens. So, for me, it’s just focusing on what I can do now and doing what I can to get back on the floor and contribute.”

The most frustrating part about this is that there’s not a legitimate timetable for his return. This has been a lingering issue for years now, and he’s been quite injury-prone and has taken way more time to heal than the average NBA player.



“I have no expectations,” Simmons said of a potential return. “I just come in every day and work. I think that’s one of the things about having injuries like this. I’ve known not to put too much pressure on the exact date or whatever it is. It’s just continue to get better and get to a point where you can play. Honestly, I wish it was a sprained ankle. It’s one of those things where you just don’t know. But we’ve seen a lot of progress, which has been a good thing. It’s very positive.”

It’s crazy to think that Simmons was a Defensive Player of the Year candidate just some years ago, and he’s still just 27 years old. But no one seems to believe in him anymore, and it just feels like he’s never going to be healthy and able to play for a full season.

“I talked to somebody close to [Ben Simmons],” Spears said. “They would say, ‘I would say he’s in the final stage of prep for the season and he has passed every benchmark and is as healthy as he has ever been since his last year in Philly.’”



“Brooklyn has been incredibly supportive and the plan is for him to be the Nets’ point guard and primary ball handler this season,” Spears added. “The expectation is he will fully resume his career at the level he has prior to leaving Philadelphia.”
