In college football, the game isn’t over until the whistle blows and zeros are on the clock. <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/indiana" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Indiana Hoosiers</a> quarterback Fernando Mendoza made sure of that—and then some—during his program’s road win over the Iowa Hawkeyes.



Week 5 of the 2025 NCAA season had no shortage of drama. Across the country, Saturday was packed with tension and high-voltage action. That was also true for the matchup between Indiana and <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/iowa-hawkeyes" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Iowa</a>, which ended in a 20-15 victory for the visiting Hoosiers in Iowa City.



However, the game could’ve ended in a 20–13 triumph had it not been for a controversial play by Mendoza to close things out. With only three seconds left on fourth down, Mendoza was snapped the football before running all the way back to his own end zone. 



Taking the safety assured Iowa two points, but not the football back. The clock, however, had already hit zero well before Mendoza reached the end zone. As a result, many fans across the nation erupted in outcry as their bets were lost on a seemingly meaningless play. Now, Indiana’s signal-caller has spoken on the “money-costing” fiasco.

“I didn’t want to ever put our team in jeopardy,” Fernando Mendoza said after the game, per On3. “Maybe if I slide with one second left, there might be some quirk where we might have to punt it. I just wanted to get out of the safety, and I know I shouldn’t be saying this, I probably cooked people’s spreads and I really apologize for that. However, in that moment, my goal was to win the game.”

After his successful stint at Drake and West Virginia, Darian DeVries adds a new chapter to his career.


 


The news was confirmed by college sports journalist Pete Thamel, who, through his official X (formerly Twitter) account, provided more details regarding the arrival of the successful coach to the Hoosiers.



“Sources: Indiana is targeting West Virginia coach Darian DeVries to be the next coach, sources tell me and @jeffborzello. DeVries spent one year at WVU, where he went 19-13 and got snubbed from NCAA Tournament. He led Drake to three NCAA tournaments in four years,” Thamel reported via @PeteThamel.



Once his arrival at the program was confirmed, DeVries broke his silence, stating that he feels he is facing one of the most important challenges of his career.

<h2>Scott Dolson’s confidence in DeVries</h2>



Hiring a new coach for a program can represent a significant risk if expectations are not met. Despite this, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/indiana">Indiana Hoosiers</a> Athletic Director Scott Dolson stated that DeVries meets all the requirements to lead the program forward.



“We went into this coaching search with some very specific things we were looking for in our next head coach, and Darian emerged as someone who, on paper, met and often exceeded our criteria,“ he started.


 


“Once we had a chance to talk to him, we knew we had the right person. Darian has a plan for building a championship culture that can compete at the highest level on a year-in, year-out basis. He has extensive D-1 coaching experience that includes 15 trips to the NCAA Tournament as a head coach or as an assistant. This past season at West Virginia, he inherited a last-place Big 12 team with no significant contributors returning, and managed to more than double its win total despite a pair of significant season-ending injuries. Finally, he is passionate about the opportunity to lead our program. We are excited to welcome Darian and the entire DeVries family to our Hoosier family.”



<h2>DeVries’ great tenure at Drake and West Virginia</h2>



Before the HC DeVries arrived, Drake had struggled for six consecutive seasons, including three years with fewer than ten wins. In his first season, he led the team to a 24-10 record and a conference championship. DeVries is responsible for three of the seven all-time NCAA Tournament appearances for Drake, marking the school’s first trip since 2008.



Darian DeVries’ impressive six-year tenure at Drake earned him the head coaching position at West Virginia last offseason. Over those six years, he posted a 150-55 record. Under his leadership, the Bulldogs captured one regular season title, two conference tournament championships, and made three NCAA Tournament appearances. The team earned No. 10, 11, and 12 seeds, but were eliminated in the first round each time.

Coming from the California Golden Bears, Fernando Mendoza has agreed to join Indiana through the transfer portal. The quarterback has posted strong numbers despite his team’s results not backing him up.

Sherrone Moore remains confident, though realistic, the odds are not in favor of Ann Arbor’s program. The Wolverines head coach made a strong admission on the Hoosiers and Coach Cignetti’s work.

“For them, they just did a really good job of bringing in the right guys, the right people,” Sherrone Moore told reporters on Monday. “I think Coach Cignetti has done an unbelievable job with building the program how he has – he has done it before and done it in the past.“

<h2>Indiana’s renaissance under Cignetti</h2>



What a difference a year makes in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ncaa">NCAA</a>. At this time in 2023, Michigan was the second-best program in the country, while Indiana held a 3-6 (1-5) record. This year, the coin has landed on the Hoosiers’ side. 



Fans in Bloomington are thrilled with a strong program that has a high likelihood of making the playoffs. Meanwhile, fans in Ann Arbor can take comfort in last season’s glory, but the present looks grim.



The Hoosiers ended the 2023 campaign with a 3-9 record. On head coach Cignetti’s first year at the helm, the team is trending towards a 10+ win season. Indiana did not have a winning full-season since 2019. With three games to spare, the program has already equaled their win-total from the past three seasons.
