The departure of the 35-year-old looked like a real possibility as the veteran quarterback was hitting the open market this offseason, which is why general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah said the team had a plan B.

Chicago holds the first overall pick in this year’s draft, so chances are the team decides to start over with former Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams. With that in mind, Fields could make sense for the Vikings.

While he couldn’t live up to the expectations as a third-overall pick with the Jets, the USC product has shown glimpses of his talent throughout his six seasons in the NFL. He has experience but is younger than other candidates in the free agency.

Another alternative the Vikings may explore is to get a seasoned quarterback for a low price that can respond in the short term. Joe Flacco was the Comeback Player of the Year in 2023, proving he still has something left in the tank for teams with need at quarterback.

While he’s not getting any younger, the 39-year-old did great for the Browns last year, leading Cleveland to the playoffs after spending the first half of the season at home. Flacco’s experience in the league includes a <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/super-bowl">Super Bowl</a> ring, which Minnesota has been craving for decades now.



Of course, the Vikings can take other routes, with both Nick Mullens and Jaren Hall under contract while they hold the 11th overall pick in the 2024 Draft. In the event they go for a rookie with their first selection, veteran free agents such as Ryan Tannehill, Jacoby Brissett, and Marcus Mariota could also be worth keeping an eye on.

<h2>Jets Have Love For Flacco, But There Are No Regrets</h2>



“I don’t think I ever let myself go there,” Saleh told Newsday. “We love Joe, first and foremost. We spent a couple of years with him, love him, love the way he prepares, really pumped for him and the success he’s having. It’s just the decision we made in terms of the quarterback room and the way we developed it over the course of OTAs and training camp. It was just a decision we made.”



Flacco wasn’t at his best during his three-year stint with the Jets, but he could’ve at least given them a veteran presence and leadership in the locker room. Now, he’s become a fan favorite in Cleveland and is having a movie-like career resurgence:



“I enjoyed my time while I was there, and it is what it is,” Flacco said. “I’m happy to be where I am, that’s for sure. There’s 32 teams in the NFL. They’re just another one. I got a lot of guys over there I really respect and had an awesome few years in that locker room. So a lot of respect for those guys.”



<h2>Football Isn’t That Simple</h2>



Of course, it’s not like Flacco would’ve led the Jets to success right away. They don’t have the same elite offensive line the Browns have, and with his lack of mobility, chances are he would’ve fared as poorly as Wilson did, but that’s something we’ll never know now.

After spending the last three seasons with the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/new-york-jets">New York Jets</a>, where he mostly served as backup, Flacco hit free agency. Even at 38, the veteran quarterback believes in himself.



“Listen, I can still play,” Flacco told ESPN. “That’s me talking, obviously. I’m hoping that there’s the silver lining that I’m not anywhere right now and that I can be available to anybody. I’m not saying it’s going to be the truth, but if I was tied up with somebody as a backup and just didn’t play at all when all of a sudden three guys go down, well, I’d probably be in the back of my head be thinking, ‘Oh, man, would I have had an opportunity to go there?’



“So I do think that at the point that my career is in, it is a positive thing in a lot of ways that I’m not anywhere right now, because if somebody does need somebody, at least I’m available.



“I still believe that I have all of the athletic and physical tools to do it. In terms of the quarterback and the mental part of it, I’ve only gotten better over the last 15 years. So I feel just as physical as I ever have. I mean, not to say that I’m not 27, 28 years old anymore. But I’m in great shape and I don’t see a real drop-off.”

“I’m not vaccinated. I definitely have my reasons,” Flacco said, as quoted by ProFootballTalk. “Honestly, I probably like to talk about this topic more than anybody. It’s one of those things that you debate with all the time. But overall I’ve felt like it’s more of a distraction than anything. So I feel like to kind of talk about it too much and give you all my beliefs, is more of a distraction than anything. I think the most important thing is going to play the football game.”

<h2>Flacco Says He’ll Follow NFL Protocol</h2>
Flacco didn’t want to read too much into Aaron Rodgers’ situation. He wore a mask during his press conference and promised to follow the league’s health and safety protocols as long as he’s out there:
“I mean, we all know what the rules are,” the veteran QB added. “So when those things happen, we’ve all been told what the protocols are, and we’ve all been following the protocols. If you want to go out there and play the game you love, you have to do what you have to do.”
The Jets will need as much help as they can from Flacco to try and get their third win of the season. The third-stringer will get the nod over injured QBs Zach Wilson and Mike White, and hopefully, he’ll be able to turn back the clock and shut down the doubters.
