<p>Of course, <strong>this is just a projection, </strong>and while they look much better than they were last season on paper, they still need to prove that when they take the court and it actually counts. </p>



<p>Even so, while he might not be beloved or a popular figure among most fans, Dan Hurley has certainly earned the benefit of the doubt, and this team <strong>cannot be overlooked.</strong></p>

<p>You can’t talk about <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-basketball" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">college basketball</a> history unless you’re ready to talk about <strong>Geno Auriemma</strong> for a long time. He’s a living legend, and he just won UConn’s record 12th national championship.</p>



<p>However, there was a world in which that never happened. Shortly after winning the title, he admitted that he thought of walking away from the game <strong>almost a decade ago.</strong></p>



<p>The Huskies, led by program legend <strong>Breanna Stewart</strong>, won four national championships in a row, so the table looked set for Auriemma to ride into the sunset back in 2016.</p>

<p><strong><em>“There was a big part of my inner circle of people that I trust that were hoping that after the Stewie fourth in a row that I should have called it a day back then,”</em></strong> Auriemma admitted, via <em>ESPN</em>. <em>“That would have been apropos, I guess — ride off into the sunset. But … you make the decision you’re not finished yet, and then three, four years go by, and people start telling you that UConn is not UConn anymore and it’s somebody else’s turn. And then five years go by, and six years go by, and seven years go by.”</em></p>

<p>Fortunately for Huskies Nation, Auriemma just wasn’t ready to call it quits, and while he’s <strong>71 years old already,</strong> it doesn’t seem like he’s going anywhere anytime soon.</p>



<p>He’s one of the most prominent figures in college basketball history, and he has a legitimate chance to add more silverware to his trophy case with <strong>Azzi Fudd and Sarah Strong</strong> leading the way this season. </p>

<p>UConn had no mercy on the South Carolina Gamecocks in April, beating them 82-59 to win the title<strong>. Despite losing Bueckers</strong>, they remain strong enough to defend their throne.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Of course, repeating as champions will be way easier said than done, but with this roster and coach <strong>Geno Auriemma</strong>, they should continue to be the team to beat in college basketball. </p>

I think Sarah Strong’s upside, combined with Azzi’s injury history, makes me think that Strong is the player that’s going to maybe accomplish more by the time she finishes at UConn and could perhaps have a stronger resume than Azzi Fudd.”</em></p>

<p>Azzi Fudd went from playing 17 games in 2022-23 and 2023-24 to playing 34 in the 2024-25 campaign. She averaged <strong>13.6 points, 2.0 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.4 steals per game.&nbsp;</strong></p>



<p>With Bueckers out of the picture,<strong> Geno Auriemma’s team</strong> will need a new face, and it seems like this is a good problem for the veteran coach. Fudd and Strong are two incredible players, but it seems as though the forward has a higher ceiling than the guard.</p>

<p>The<strong> Dallas Wings </strong>young star also said that coach Geno Auriemma was actually quite supportive of his players getting money, as long as that wasn’t the reason why they chose to play for the Huskies:</p>



<p><strong><em>“He was very receptive to everything going on,”</em></strong> Bueckers continued.<em> “But at the end of the day, he always wanted our priorities to be basketball. IF you’re coming to UConn for money, you’re not coming to the right place. <strong>He would always joke, ‘You’re making more money than me now. Why do you need me?</strong>’ He’s just joking, but he was happy for us.” </em></p>



<p>That’s<strong> classic Coach Ariemma right there.</strong> But at the end of the day, all he demanded from his players was hard work and commitment, so there was no need to worry about their finances as well.</p>

<p>For the second consecutive offseason, <strong>Dan Hurley</strong> was tied to an NBA coaching vacancy. This time, however, he was quick to dismiss that narrative and let everybody know that he wasn’t interested.</p>



<p>Whether he was actually a candidate to replace Tom Thibodeau and take the reins of the<strong> New York Knicks </strong>is unclear, but Hurley wanted to make it loud and clear that he wanted to stay at UConn.</p>



<p>Of course, some fans and analysts may have taken this as a dig at the Knicks. Nevertheless, it didn’t have anything to do with them; <strong>he just doesn’t see himself as an NBA coach. </strong></p>



<h2>Dan Hurley says he’s a ‘college coach’</h2>



<p><strong><em>“So yeah, no, that’s not even something I thought about (or) considered,</em></strong>” he told Dom Amore of the Hartford Courant. <strong><em>“I’m a college coach.”</em></strong></p>

<p>Hurley referred to himself as the best coach in <a href="http://bolavip.com/en/college-basketball" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">college basketball</a> last season, so that’s clearly a part of his identity. Also, he turned down the Los Angeles Lakers’ approach despite <strong>their very lucrative offer.</strong></p>



<p>He’s building one of the <strong>most impressive coaching résumés</strong> in college basketball history. The lights might be brighter somewhere else, but Hurley knows that the grass isn’t always greener.</p>

<p>The<strong> UConn Huskies </strong>entered last season with high hopes and expectations. Unfortunately, Dan Hurley’s team fell short, and they were just never the dominant force of old.</p>



<p>Their pursuit of a historic three-peat was cut short when the <strong>Florida Gators </strong>knocked them out of the second round of the NCAA Tournament, and they struggled for most of the regular season as well.</p>

<p>He then continued to gush about the Huskies’ backcourt, adding that they had enough size, depth, and experience to be a <strong>force to be reckoned with next season:</strong></p>



<p><em>“I’m talking the entire backcourt—not just Solo and Silas, not just Malachi and Silas—but when you add Braylon Mullins, when you add Alec Millender, when you add Jacob Furphy, who’s listed as a guard for this UConn team: size, depth, experience, speed, power, All-Americans,</em>” he continued. <strong><em>“You know, Mr. Indiana Basketball in Braylon Mullins, who’s going to be the next one-and-done for this talented UConn squad. So we’re going to get into that and break out this new core four, if you will, with the new additions to this UConn team.”</em></strong></p>

<p>Of course, each player is different, and expecting one to replicate what the other did isn’t only unfair, <strong>it’s often not realistic.</strong> That being said, Fudd has what it takes to fill those big shoes.</p>

<p>With Paige Bueckers creating her legacy in the WNBA following a championship run with the <strong>UConn Huskies</strong> in the 2024-25 NCAA season, <strong>Azzi Fudd</strong>, a close friend of Bueckers, has stepped up as the leader of the team.</p>



<p>Fudd, who also flirted with the possibility of going pro with Bueckers, <strong>returned to Connecticut to help Geno Auriemma and Co. </strong>defend their national championship. <strong>Sarah Strong</strong>, another team star, is enjoying Fudd’s new facet, but she’s <strong>not wasting opportunities to tease her teammate</strong>.</p>



<p>Overtime WBB <strong>shared a video of the Huskies’ practice on Instagram</strong>, where Fudd had a microphone on her for the session. The clip showed Fudd and Strong playfully going at it as the team prepares for another season.</p>

They will start the season as one of the biggest favorites to win it all, but it won’t be an easy job.</p>

<p>According to David Cobb of CBS Sports, there’s a chance that <strong>UConn’s Dan Hurley </strong>might consider taking the job, even after infamously turning down the Los Angeles Lakers last offseason. </p>



<h2>UConn could be a candidate to coach the Knicks</h2>



<p>“Ins<em>tead of a franchise anchored by a star approaching 40 — as James was last summer — and another over 30 (Anthony Davis), Hurley would be considering an organization with a core in its championship-pursuing prime. W<strong>ith Jalen Brunson, OG Anunoby, Karl-Anthony Towns and Josh Hart under contract for at least three more seasons each, the Knicks have a strong, proven nucleus in place</strong>,”</em> wrote Cobb. </p>

<p>Needless to say, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the Knicks are even interested in hiring the former national championship-winning coach, but he’s already <strong>drawn consideration from NBA sides.</strong></p>

<p>Perhaps he didn’t handle things the right way last season and closed some doors in the pros because of that. But from<strong> a pragmatic standpoint</strong>, he should at least be on their shortlist. </p>

However, <strong>Dan Hurley</strong> is already excited for the future, and he made it clear with a powerful five-word comment about the head coach opening on the <strong>New York Knicks</strong>.</p>

<h2>East and West Coast</h2>



<p>Last year, after capturing a second-straight <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ncaa">NCAA</a> title with the Huskies, Hurley<strong> was sought after by the Los Angeles Lakers</strong>, who hoped for him to succeed Darvin Ham, until J.J. Reddick eventually took over, while Hurley stayed in Storrs.</p>

<p>Now, as the Knicks pursue their 32nd head coach in franchise history, they inquired about Hurley, who would stay in the East Coast if he were to take over in Manhattan. <strong>However, it’s looking bleak for New York’s aspirations</strong>, as Hurley is more interested in chasing UConn’s seventh national championship in men’s <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-basketball">college basketball</a>.</p>
