<p>The veteran right-hander, who won a <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/world-series">World Series</a> with the Cardinals in 2011 and owns a 3.74 career ERA, <strong>pitched for Team USA in the 2023 WBC,</strong> when the team captured a silver medal. He also represented the national team at the 2007 Pan American Games, where he earned another silver medal.</p>



<h2>Injuries in the last World Baseball Classic</h2>



<p>During the 2023 edition of the World Baseball Classic, <strong>no Team USA pitcher was reported injured during the tournament</strong>. However, the most notable injuries of the event involved Edwin Díaz and José Altuve, both of whom missed part of the 2023 MLB season as a result.</p>

<p>Díaz, who was pitching for the New York Mets at the time and representing Puerto Rico, did not blow out his arm. Instead,<strong> he suffered a knee injury, tearing the patellar tendon</strong> during a postgame celebration with teammates after giving everything he had on the mound in a victory.</p>

<p>Lynn’s message could be viewed as controversial. He did not suffer an injury following the WBC and, despite pitching for two <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/mlb">MLB</a> teams that season, the White Sox and the Dodgers, <strong>made 32 starts, posting a 5.73 ERA </strong>and a 13-11 record despite the added workload of the international tournament.</p>



<h2>MLB doesn’t want injuries in the WBC</h2>



<p>It’s also worth recalling Rob Manfred’s comments in 2023 when addressing the topic. The MLB commissioner emphasized that the league does not want injuries and noted that <strong>officials were exploring ways to adjust the WBC schedule</strong> to better align with the regular season and postseason calendar.</p>



<p><em>“We have talked about timing until your head hurts,” Manfred said prior to the 2023 WBC Final. “It’s just no perfect time<strong>. We can’t really do it during the playoffs because so many players would be down</strong>. We have talked about something in the middle of the season. I think on balance, although it’s not perfect, this is probably the right place for it.”</em></p>

<p>Tarik Skubal had nothing to hide and confirmed he will make just one start for Team USA in the <strong>2026 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/world-baseball-classic">World Baseball Classic</a></strong> this March. It’s a limited role, as expected, but at least he was clear about how he plans to contribute to the national team.</p>



<p><em>“Detroit Tigers Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal confirms the plan for him all along this spring. <p>Not everyone was pleased with the limited commitment. <em>“It is really disappointing to hear Tarik Skubal will make only one start for Team USA in the WBC (against Great Britain). Team USA reaching the finals won’t change that. <strong>The attraction of the WBC is talent. </strong>If the best players in the world aren’t committed, it loses its sparkle,”</em> wrote Dan Clark on X (@danclarksports).</p>

<p><em>“Repeat after me: It is not true that a player cannot participate in the WBC without insurance. That is false. <strong>The player always has the option to convert the contract into a ‘non-guaranteed’ one and that’s it.</strong> Of course, I don’t recommend doing that. But it can be done. It’s a matter of risk, and nobody wants to take it on — why would a company that makes a living from it do so?,” Rojas wrote on X.</em></p>



<h2>Insurance companies unwilling to take WBC injury risks</h2>



<p>Rojas explained that one of the main reasons an MLB player such as Francisco Lindor cannot participate in the 2026 WBC is that insuranc<strong>e providers may detect a pre-existing issue, </strong>such as an elbow concern revealed on an MRI, and automatically deny coverage.</p>

<p>The insurer’s relationship is with the team that guarantees the contract, not the player. That affects players like Jose Altuve and Lindor, among others. Players could <strong>theoretically assume the risk themselves or have their club guarantee the deal</strong> without insurance protection.</p>



<p><em>“Contract insurance is a relationship between <strong>the insurance company and the team that pays the contract. </strong>Not between the insurance company and the player. A player without insurance (due to high risk) can take the risk himself, or his team can guarantee the contract for him. <strong>The player and the team have those options.</strong>”</em></p>



<h2>Carlos Santana will play without insurance</h2>



<p>Rojas also pointed to Carlos Santana as an example. <strong>Santana will participate in the WBC without insurance,</strong> meaning he will assume the risk of injury during the tournament. He recently signed a one-year,<strong> $2 million contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks. </strong>The reporter also referenced Miguel Cabrera and his situation with the Detroit Tigers in a previous WBC.</p>



<p><em>“In his last WBC, Miguel Cabrera was no longer eligible for insurance. Detroit guaranteed the contract so he could participate. Carlos Santana is not eligible this year. And he’s going without insurance. There are always options, but very rarely does someone step up to take on the risk.”</em></p>

<p><em>“Javier Báez’s <strong>name remains in limbo </strong>heading into the 2026 World Baseball Classic, according to confirmation obtained by EL VOCERO through the player’s agency, DSports Network,”</em> wrote Gabriel Quiles, who had previously reported on X that <strong>Báez has not been denied permission</strong> to participate.</p>



<p>Báez put together a strong season with the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/detroit-tigers">Tigers</a>, appearing<strong> in 126 games </strong>and showing he was back in good form after being<strong> limited to just 80 games in 2024</strong>. From 2021 through 2023, Báez had consistently played 120-plus games per season, and his improved health in 2025 reignited Puerto Rico’s interest in him for the WBC.</p>



<h2>Why hasn’t Báez been fully cleared for the WBC?</h2>

<p>A report from Josafat Pérez on X confirmed the Yankees catcher’s decision. <em>“Austin Wells <strong>has changed his mind.</strong> <strong>Following the birth of his daughter,</strong> with everything in perfect health, he has decided to participate with the Dominican national team,”</em> the analyst wrote.</p>



<p>Pérez also highlighted why Wells’ commitment could be key for the Dominican Republic at the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/world-baseball-classic">WBC</a>: <em>“Quick metrics: a defensively solid catcher,<strong> strong framing, pop time close to 1.95 seconds, and a caught-stealing rate around 30%</strong>. On top of that, he adds a left-handed bat, which is valuable for lineup balance in a short tournament.”</em></p>



<h2>Wells key behind the plate for the Dominican Republic</h2>



<p>With Wells joining the roster, he would replace Agustín Ramírez and serve as one of the two catchers for the World Baseball Classic<strong> alongside Yainer Díaz</strong>, <strong>who also brings <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/mlb">MLB</a> experience</strong>. Díaz has spent four seasons with the Houston Astros and has appeared in 100-plus games per year consistently since 2023.</p>

The Puerto Rico Baseball Federation<strong> is also seeking private insurance alternatives </strong>for its players who have been denied insurance, per Gaby Quile,” Shawn Spradling reported on X.</em></p>
