“The Colts hung up on my face. It was a little crazy,” Worthy said on the Rich Eisen Show. “The Colts called my phone on draft day and hung up the phone. They said, ‘Hello, this is so and so with the Colts.’ And then they stopped talking and hung up.”

The Indianapolis Colts aimed to strengthen their defense during the first round of the recent draft. At No. 15 overall, the club selected edge rusher Laiatu Latu, whom many regarded as the best defensive prospect in the league.

On the first day of the 2024 NFL Draft, the Bills sent the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/kansas-city-chiefs">Chiefs</a> their original first-round pick (No. 28), which Kansas City used to get Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy. The deal also saw Buffalo give up a fourth-round pick (No. 133) and a seventh-round pick (No. 248). In return, the Bills got the Chiefs’ first-round pick (No. 32), a third-rounder (No. 95) and a seventh-rounder (No. 221).



The trade didn’t sit well with most fans, as it let a living dynasty arm its quarterback with yet another weapon. Months later, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/buffalo-bills">Bills</a> general manager Brandon Beane explained why he felt good about trading with the Chiefs.



“People got mad at us at the draft for trading with the Chiefs or whatever. Ultimately they made a move that they thought fit their team and we made a move… that’s what’s funny. There can be good moves for both teams. It doesn’t have to be a win or lose,” Beane said on the Ross Tucker Football Podcast, via Arrowhead Addict. “Everybody’s trying to validate ‘who got the best trade?’ And sometimes that does happen, but there’s other times when both teams can succeed after a move.”

The move took many by surprise, considering that the Bills have struggled to win a Super Bowl as the Chiefs stood in their way many times in the last few years. Beane, however, is not against trading with rivals: “Listen, you’re competitive. You never want another team, somebody in your division or an AFC rival, whatever it is, you never want those guys to get better. We’re wired competitively, but ultimately, we always have to do what’s best for our team—whether we make a trade with another club or whatever it is.“

The Texas product had an impressive NFL debut in the season opener, running for a 21-yard touchdown in his first touch. <h2>Worthy’s start to life in the NFL with Reid, Mahomes’ Chiefs</h2>



Worthy had a sensational debut with the Chiefs in the 2024 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl">NFL</a> season opener against the Baltimore Ravens. The Fresno native ran for a 21-yard touchdown in his first touch, following that score by finding the end zone on a 35-yard catch.

“When I go back to the tape, I feel like there’s going to be a couple more that I thought about taking those chances, and I think he ended up winning. Worthy became one of the most interesting prospects in this year’s draft after his performance at the Combine. The speedster posted a whooping 4.21 seconds on the 40-yard dash. <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/kansas-city-chiefs">Kansas City</a> saw the potential on the Texas prospect and selected him with the 28th overall pick. Worthy’s sample size is limited and DC’s are still figuring out which is the best way to tackle the Chiefs’ speedster.

Xavier Worthy may have already made a great impression on head coach <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/andy-reid">Andy Reid</a> and quarterback Patrick Mahomes after a great NFL debut with the Kansas City Chiefs, but the rookie wide receiver is keeping his feet on the ground.



Speaking to the media on Wednesday, the 21-year-old let everyone know he’s not letting the success from his debut go to his head. In fact, Worthy made it clear he’s already thinking about what’s coming next for the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/kansas-city-chiefs">Chiefs</a>.



“Oh, man, it’s been cool just to have that do what I did on Thursday, but I have this 24-hour rule for you to do it,” Worthy said, via Chiefs Wire. “You live it out, and then you forget about it. It’s on to the next. So, I’m on to the next.”



Needless to say, both Reid and <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/patrick-mahomes">Mahomes</a> will probably like Worthy’s mindset. The fact that the rookie is already aligned with the culture that brought so much success to Arrowhead in recent years should be a very promising sign for the Chiefs.

“I think they definitely gave him… they honored his speed for sure, with how they played when he was in,” Reid said. “… I think he showed that he can not only go down the field when needed, but he can also – and I know it was a busted coverage – but he can do that. The first-round pick had a sensational <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl">NFL</a> debut, scoring two touchdowns in just three touches to help the Chiefs beat the Baltimore Ravens in the season opener. Worthy ran for a 21-yard touchdown in his first touch in the first quarter, before catching a 35-yard TD in the fourth quarter.

Mahomes also raved about Worthy, saying, “Just having him out there opens things up. Shell coverages are getting Trav [Travis Kelce] and Rashee [Rashee Rice] open underneath. When we get Hollywood [Marquise Brown] back, it’s going to be tough for defenses to choose who they want to cover.”



With Mahomes singing Worthy’s praises after the season opener, it’s highly likely the rookie wideout will see even more targets and opportunities. However, with a talented receiving corps that includes Kelce, Rice, and soon-to-return Marquise Brown, Worthy will still have to earn his keep and consistently make plays to secure a prominent role in the offense.

Worthy got off to a sensational start to the game at Arrowhead, showing off his impressive speed to score his first touchdown in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl">NFL</a> in the very first ball he touched in the season opener.



The 21-year-old ran for 21 yards to make it all the way to the endzone, and even though he seemed to forget to claim the football after the celebrations, Mahomes didn’t.

<h2>Xavier Worthy promises to makes Mahomes, Chiefs stronger</h2>



The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/kansas-city-chiefs">Chiefs</a> traded up in the 2024 NFL Draft to get Worthy in the first round. The Texas product was selected 28th overall, and he’s already proving the team was right in using that pick in him.



The California native had already made an impression at the at the 2024 NFL Combine, setting the 40-yard dash record of 4.21 seconds. Until then, John Ross held the highest mark at 4.22 in 2017.

<h2>Xavier Worthy’s speed makes Mahomes, Chiefs very optimistic</h2>



While his first touchdown in his first touch speaks volumes of his speed, Worthy had already given the Chiefs a promising sign by setting the scouting combine record of 4.21 seconds in the 40-yard dash.



Mahomes already noticed Worthy’s potential at training camp, letting everyone know how helpful the Texas product could prove to be for a Chiefs offense that hopes to improve from last season.

“Xavier does a great job,” Mahomes told reporters in August. “Obviously he’s fast, but it’s almost like he runs fast and he can run with pace fast, and so he’s able to track the ball really well, he runs a lot of great routes, and he’s going to get as physical a camp as any here, so he’s been doing a great job trying to fight off press as best as he can, getting through there and making plays happen, and he’ll keep getting better and better. I mean, if he can get through this camp, he’ll be able to get through a lot of stuff, so I’m excited for him and how he’s kind of progressed throughout camp.”

Nonetheless, the Texas standout doesn’t come without some concerns. He’s under 170 pounds, and while his speed is remarkable, he might struggle with the league’s physicality. However, he doesn’t think that’ll be a problem at all:

“I weighed in at 169 [pounds],” Worthy said, per Sports Illustrated. “I don’t think I took big hits; I delivered them. I feel like it’s not going to be a problem. I feel like just understanding your strengths and your weaknesses, I feel like that’s the big thing in the league. Don’t, obviously, don’t try to go hit a 250-pound linebacker. Just understanding your strengths, like I said. D-Jack (DeSean Jackson) came into the league at 169 and understood his strengths, so just using your strengths to your strength.”



Of course, he wouldn’t be the only wide receiver with a rather small frame to find success in this game. Also, the Chiefs have an offensive mastermind in Andy Reid, and he knows how to put his players in a position to succeed.

At the end of the day, the last thing the league could afford was for Patrick Mahomes to get a speedster and a downhill threat. The Chiefs want to three-peat, and the Vince Lombardi trophy may have gotten a little closer.
