Still, there’s one moment in his career that continues to spark debate. In 2013, he lost to Floyd Mayweather—one of the all-time greats—and that defeat became a turning point in both his career and personal life.
Canelo Alvarez shares surprising revelation about his fight vs. Floyd Mayweather
In 2013, Canelo Alvarez was a rising star in the boxing world. Many believed he was the future of the sport, but he needed to beat the best to prove it.
That year, he stepped into the ring against one of the greatest boxers of all time: Floyd Mayweather. The American entered the fight with a perfect 44-0 record, and defeating him was always going to be a monumental challenge.
Experience proved to be the deciding factor, as Mayweather won by majority decision. While Canelo put up a respectable fight, it wasn’t enough to sway the judges.
Now, Canelo has opened up about that night. In an interview with former soccer player Miguel Layun, he admitted he simply wasn’t ready to face Mayweather at that point in his career.
“When I lost to Floyd Mayweather, I was 23 years old. Obviously, I wasn’t ready for that fight, but I felt like I was,” Canelo recalled. “I think I fell into a depression, but I didn’t have anyone with the knowledge to tell me that there were psychologists. I got depressed, and the best I could do was start thinking. It taught me something—I said, ‘I’m going to be the best in the world.’ I didn’t think this was going to stop me. I lost to the best in the world, one of the greatest in boxing history.”
Canelo also revealed that his biggest fear is failure—which is why he works so hard to overcome it. He acknowledged that it’s impossible to eliminate fear entirely, but he constantly pushes himself to succeed in spite of it.
