The North Carolina Tar Heels are gearing up for a season unlike no other. After signing head coach Bill Belichick to command the program, the school in Chapel Hill elevated its expectations massively ahead of next season. Adding on to the hype, the program announced the signing of a multi-sport athlete who could become a fan favorite.

Belichick’s greatness as a coach was never limited to his creative game plans or his split-second decisions during games. His genius extended beyond that, as he made bold moves that paid off with the biggest prizes.

As he arrived at Chapel Hill, his risk-taking trait hasn’t wavered, and ahead of the 2025 NCAA season Belichick may have another trick up his sleeve as he announced the signing of a multi-sport star to the football roster.

Lacrosse and football star Gary Merrill has confirmed he will be a part of Belichick’s Tar Heels roster. Merrill was already committed to play lacrosse at Chapel Hill, and will join the football team as well.

Merrill’s stats

Gary Merrill is a five-star lacrosse recruit, who has been on UNC’s radar for a long time. However, as he was also named New York’s Gatorade Player of the Year at QB, after a sensational senior year in high school.

Merrill played at the quarterback position for Saint Anthony’s High School in South Huntington, N.Y. During his senior campaign, Merrill threw for 1,762 yards and 19 touchdowns, adding another 1,955 yards and 32 scores on the ground.

With Merrill’s addition, Belichick and the Tar Heels found a very mobile player, who could be used in more positions than only behind the center. It’s time for Belichick’s creativity to work some magic and shock every team in college football.
