Aaron Boone knows the New York Yankees are going through a rough stretch, marked by disappointing results and continued struggles from Luke Weaver, who hasn’t looked the same since returning from injury.
For Boone, the issues with Weaver aren’t major—he chalks them up to a “small” execution problem. Boone made it clear he still trusts his reliever heading into the next games, even though Weaver himself admitted he’s unsure of what’s going on.
“Just that last bit of execution, which is the fine line between being dominant and giving up some damage… Fully trust in him to get through that,” Boone said after Weaver gave up a home run that helped the Mets seal a recent win over the Yankees.
Weaver opens up about his situation
Weaver avoided going into detail about what’s been going wrong for him on the mound. He knows Boone is expecting better results, especially after his latest outing where he gave up two runs to the Mets. His response was blunt: he just doesn’t feel right.
“I said I’ve been feeling good, that just might be a lie now, I don’t know. It’s hard to make sense of what’s going on,” Weaver said. He added, “Pitching in the game of baseball comes in different ways,” and said he sees two options—one of them is to dig himself out and find a way to improve.
July has been a disaster for Weaver
Weaver has allowed two runs in each of his three July outings—six earned runs total, including a home run in each appearance. Over that stretch, he’s pitched just 1.3 innings and struck out three batters. It’s been a rough three-game span.
