Dave Roberts had to stomach a second straight loss for the Los Angeles Dodgers against the Milwaukee Brewers — a defeat that not only cost them the series but also featured a costly mistake by Teoscar Hernández that led to a triple.
Hernández, expected to handle his outfield duties with reliability, failed to execute on what looked like a routine play. On a ball that should’ve been a manageable catch, the veteran outfielder couldn’t get his glove down in time, allowing it to roll into the corner and setting up a Brewers rally.
Roberts didn’t hold back when discussing the play. “That ball’s gotta be a double, it’s got to be cut off. Those are little things that can’t happen,” he said — a clear message that a player with Hernández’s MLB experience should have made the play. That triple later turned into the game’s first run.
Teoscar Hernández’s Defensive Issues in Right Field
Hernández might not be the best defensive option in right field, but with the current roster setup, the Dodgers don’t seem to have many alternatives. So far this season, he’s committed two errors as an outfielder. While he doesn’t lead the league in right field errors, he is the only Dodger ranked among the top 15 players with the most errors at the position.
Fans Are Calling for Betts
After the defensive miscue went viral, Dodgers fans took to social media demanding a change — specifically, putting Mookie Betts back in right field, where his arm and instincts have been difference-makers in the past.
“Get Teo out of RF. My word. This isn’t that hard,” one fan wrote on X. “Teo back to LF. Conforto PH off the bench in spots, Mookie back to RF. Rojas to SS for now. Or ya know, call up Freeland.” Still, not everyone piled on. One fan defended Hernández, writing: “That’s actually not an easy play. You might not be able to see it on TV, but the ball is zipping by with speed.”
