Frankie Montas was back on the mound, and the New York Mets were hoping to salvage the series after dropping the first two games against the Pirates. But things quickly unraveled as Montas gave up 6 runs and 2 home runs in just 4 innings.
Mets fans didn’t hold back on social media, slamming his performance. “Not a major league performance,” one fan posted on X. Another simply wrote, “Garbage performance.” Montas’ final line: 4.0 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 1 BB, 2 HR, 5 K.
It’s worth noting that this was Montas’ first appearance since last MLB season, returning from a lengthy recovery process after suffering a lat injury in late March. His 2024 campaign follows a rough 2023 season, when he made only 11 starts and posted a 4.55 ERA.
Mets fans go after Montas
Most Mets fans were left disappointed after Montas’ rough outing in the series finale against Pittsburgh. “There’s nothing more to say. I don’t know how anyone can look at this team and think they’re a playoff team. They’re not,” one fan wrote after Montas exited the game.
Others directed their frustration at president of baseball operations David Stearns: “This is exactly what everyone expected when Stearns gave him that ridiculous contract,” one angry supporter posted, referring to Montas’ $34 million deal.
Did the team meeting even matter?
Several fans sarcastically pointed out that Montas’ meltdown came just a day after a reported team meeting led by Francisco Lindor, Brandon Nimmo, and other veterans—apparently without much involvement from the pitching staff.
Another Mets fan highlighted the offense’s struggles “Don’t let the pitching struggles blind you from the fact that our offense has been sleeping all season. No consistency at all, man. This season is getting really frustrating,” Luis Cruz posted on X.
