The Detroit Tigers endured a difficult night as Framber Valdez found himself at the center of controversy following a hit-by-pitch incident involving Trevor Story during a 10-3 loss to the Boston Red Sox. With Detroit already short on pitching depth, the situation could have further consequences if discipline follows.

Speaking after the game, Valdez made his stance clear. “It was not intentional. It was not on purpose… I was trying to throw strikes after the two consecutive home runs,” he said through a team translator, according to MLB.com, pushing back against the perception that the pitch was deliberate, all as Detroit continues trying to add value pieces to its roster, including former Yankees infielder Paul DeJong.

The moment came in the fourth inning after back-to-back home runs by Boston extended the lead. On the very next pitch, Valdez struck Story in the back, immediately escalating tensions and prompting both benches to clear in a heated exchange.

Ejection and disagreement add to a rough outing

Home plate umpire Adam Beck quickly intervened as emotions rose, and after a brief discussion, Valdez was ejected from the game. No punches were thrown, but players and coaches from both sides exchanged words before the situation settled.

Valdez later expressed frustration with the decision. I consider that completely unfair… they should have given me a warning, he said, emphasizing that he did not believe the situation warranted an immediate ejection.

Tigers face potential rotation concerns moving forward

Beyond the incident, Valdez’s performance added to Detroit’s concerns on the mound. The left-hander allowed a career-high 10 runs, over just three-plus innings, raising his ERA significantly early in the season.

With injuries already impacting the rotation, including Tarik Skubal, the Tigers may be forced to rely heavily on alternative options if Valdez is suspended. That could complicate their plans heading into an upcoming series against a division rival.

Valdez acknowledged the team’s situation but maintained his position. “I know how the situation is for this team… but there shouldn’t be a suspension in that situation,” he said.
