As preparations for a new NFL season get underway, the Philadelphia Eagles have one clear goal: to replicate last year’s success and claim back-to-back Super Bowl titles. It won’t be an easy task, but several key changes are being considered within the Jalen Hurts-led squad to make it happen.
When it comes to naming one of the most impactful players in Nick Sirianni’s squad during their most recent game—the one that earned them the Vince Lombardi Trophy—it’s impossible to overlook Cooper DeJean. The talented cornerback was instrumental in a historic interception against Patrick Mahomes.
What’s particularly interesting moving forward is how the coaching staff envisions DeJean’s role within the team. Some reports suggest that he could see significantly more snaps at safety rather than at cornerback.
“We’d like to keep him at nickel, and then in our base package we’ll find a spot for him, either at corner or safety,” DC Vic Fangio said via nbcsports.com. “A lot of it will end up depending on how the other guys develop and where we most need him. It will be determined by what’s best for him and what’s best for the team — and what’s best for the team will win out in that decision. But he’s capable of playing corner and he’s capable of playing safety.”
“I think he would play very well at safety. I think it suits his skill set, things that he does well. I just think he would do very well in there,” he also added. “It’s going to take a training camp, a few preseason games to work that out.”
DeJean’s defining moment in the Super Bowl
Midway through the second quarter of the last Super Bowl in New Orleans, on a 3rd-and-16 play, Patrick Mahomes was looking to close the gap against the Eagles, who were holding a 10–0 lead at the time.
What the quarterback didn’t expect was that his deep pass—intended for one of his receivers—would be brilliantly intercepted by Cooper DeJean, who read the play perfectly and returned the ball all the way to the Chiefs’ end zone, extending the Eagles’ lead even further.
In doing so, the cornerback cemented himself as one of the key factors behind Sirianni’s squad capturing their latest title—one they’ll be going all-in to defend once again next season.
The start of the season for the Eagles
Preparations for the upcoming season are already taking shape, and the Eagles are leaving nothing to chance in their quest to capture another title. Their first step begins at Lincoln Financial Field, where they’ll kick off Week 1 at home against the Dallas Cowboys.
The game is scheduled for Thursday, September 4, and the last time these two teams met, it was a dominant 41–7 victory for Philadelphia over Dak Prescott’s squad.
