Sean Payton and Bo Nix have formed a terrific partnership that has helped the Denver Broncos improve. Now, the head coach has named the key player who can take the quarterback’s game to a different level.

Last offseason, the Broncos made a major decision regarding their offense. The AFC West club chose to move on from Russell Wilson and selected Bo Nix in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft to replace him.

The former Oregon standout didn’t have a great start to his rookie season. However, after a few games, he proved he was worthy of being picked 12th overall and led the Broncos to their first playoff appearance in 10 years.

Sean Payton believes Broncos have key player to help Bo Nix succeed

The future looks bright for the Denver Broncos. After a disappointing run with Russell Wilson as their starting quarterback, the team opted for a fresh start at the position last year.

There were many questions about who the Broncos would pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Rumors suggested they might trade up, but they ultimately stuck with their 12th overall selection and drafted Bo Nix.

The former Oregon star was considered one of the top prospects in his class. He struggled in his debut, but a few games later, he overcame his nerves and became the leader Denver had been searching for.

The 2025 NFL season will be a major test for him. However, head coach Sean Payton believes that another second-year player can help him reach the level fans are hoping for: running back Audric Estime.

Audric Estime, RB for the Denver Broncos

Sean Payton is fully aware of Estime’s talent. With the departure of Javonte Williams, Audric Estime is expected to take over as the starter and provide key support to Bo Nix.

“Year Two for him. Just running style and his physicality, the things that got him drafted,” Payton said, via Mike Klis of KUSA. “A little bit harder for him last year — for a handful of these guys. I don’t want to say the grade was incomplete, but they just didn’t have enough [carries]. He’s a back that requires enough touches. He’s going to get those opportunities.”

Who are the running backs for the Broncos in the 2025 NFL season?

This offseason, the Broncos chose not to extend Javonte Williams’ contract. He later joined the Cowboys, leaving the starting job up for grabs.

Denver used the 60th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft to select RJ Harvey. Estime and Harvey are expected to split carries, but the second-year back could have a larger role thanks to his experience.
