Kyle Shanahan watched the San Francisco 49ers lose at home once again, this time to one of the season’s most lethal teams, the Detroit Lions, by a score of 40-34. However, one of the worst parts was that he had to confirm the first details about Brock Purdy’s injury, as the quarterback was unable to finish the game and went to the sideline.
According to the head coach, Purdy is dealing with a right elbow injury, which is believed to be related to a nerve. Shanahan also confirmed that the quarterback will undergo an exam on Tuesday, December 31. Notably, Purdy landed on that arm during a play against the Lions.
Notably, Brock Purdy underwent surgery on the same elbow earlier this year. The upcoming MRI will determine if the damage is limited to a nerve, as head coach Kyle Shanahan suggested to reporters. The injury occurred during a sack, and cameras captured Purdy on the sideline mouthing, “It’s my fault.”
If Purdy is unable to return for the final NFL regular-season game against the Arizona Cardinals, the 49ers will turn to Joshua Dobbs. Dobbs stepped in against the Lions and capitalized on the opportunity, scoring a rushing touchdown on a 7-yard attempt.
Purdy Opens Up About His Elbow Pain
Brock Purdy shared details about the pain he experienced after the injury. “Doesn’t feel the best… On that sack, I got hit on the back side. And basically, my arm was on fire. I tried throwing on the sideline, and at that point, I couldn’t.” He also admitted that not being able to finish the game with his teammates was difficult for him.
Despite the injury, Purdy contributed significantly to the game. He recorded three passing touchdowns and an impressive rushing touchdown. However, he also threw two interceptions and was sacked twice, one of which caused the injury, resulting in a loss of 12 yards. Purdy finished the game with a passer rating of 116 and praised Ricky Pearsall’s performance with the 49ers.
