Patrick Mahomes’ serious injury last season raised concerns across the Kansas City Chiefs. However, a recent post from the quarterback brought relief not only to Andy Reid but also to the entire Chiefs Kingdom.

“Day by Day! Felt Great being able to throw the ball around today!,” he shared through a story on his official Instagram account, along with a clock emoji. Although he still has months of recovery ahead, this message sounds hopeful.

Bouncing back after a lackluster season is crucial for the Chiefs. Travis Kelce has already re-signed, and now all focus is on the physical recovery of their biggest star.

If he can’t kick off the new season with Mahomes, the coach will have to turn to his latest acquisition. If that happens, Justin Fields could make NFL history by starting Week 1 with a fourth different team in his career.

The injury that sent all of Chiefs Kingdom into panic

The 2025 season took a devastating turn for Patrick Mahomes when he suffered a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee during a Week 15 loss to the Chargers. The injury occurred late in the fourth quarter when a defender rolled onto his leg during a scramble, forcing him to undergo reconstructive surgery just days later and miss the final three games of the regular season.

Reid’s options moving forward

Chiefs‘ quarterback room has a new look for 2026, serving as vital insurance while Mahomes recovers from his significant injury. Following a mid-March trade with the Jets, the depth chart is currently led by Justin Fields, who is expected to handle all first-team reps during OTAs and training camp.

Behind him, the Chiefs have veteran Chris Oladokun and Jake Haener to round out the rotation. Despite these options, it’s clear Reid is eagerly waiting on Mahomes for the season opener.
