The Colorado Avalanche made one of the most notable moves of the year by acquiring Martin Necas in a three-team trade that sent Mikko Rantanen to the Carolina Hurricanes. Since arriving in Colorado, the Czech forward has had an immediate impact, showing strong chemistry with star center Nathan MacKinnon.
Necas tallied 28 points in 30 regular season games and added 5 more in the playoffs, proving his value to the Avs. However, he is now entering the final year of his two-year contract, which carries a $6.5 million cap hit, and is already eligible for an extension.
The Avalanche front office is preparing for key negotiations as they map out the future of a roster led by MacKinnon. In that context, speculation is already circulating about the kind of deal Necas might be offered moving forward.
How much could Necas’ new deal cost?
According to NHL insider Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet, “the feeling is Martin Necas could get $10 million or more,” which means the Avs may have to brace for an offer near that amount. That figure significantly raises the bar and could create some tension within the team’s salary cap structure.
Colorado’s intentions regarding Necas
The Avalanche’s stance is clear, they want to avoid losing another key piece by locking up Nečas long-term. Reports suggest Colorado is targeting a seven-year extension worth around $9 million per season.
While Kypreos’ report may force Colorado to stretch a bit further financially, the organization remains committed to getting a deal done before the start of the 2025–26 season. If talks stall, Necas could explore a trade request, which would be a major blow to the franchise.
