It hasn’t been the best week for Real Madrid President Florentino Perez, first the proposed European Super League fell apart within 48 hours after its initial announcement and now his club’s long-time captain has said no to a contract extension.

The 35-year-old Ramos has been at Real Madrid since 2005 and has made over 600 appearances for the Spanish giants winning a total of 22 titles including 4 Champions Leagues in that stretch. According to reports out of Spain, Ramos turned down the two-year extension and salary cut after talks with Florentino Perez went bad after a Champions League win against Italian side Atalanta.

At the moment, Ramos is recovering from an injury and will be back in action in time for the semifinal clash against Chelsea. If Real Madrid were to win the UEFA Champions League, it would be a fifth title for Ramos. Here is the breakdown of the split between Ramos and Perez.

According to ABC in Spain, a March deadline was set for Ramos to accept a two-year contract at a 10% pay cut, which Ramos has since considered and turned down. After meeting with Florentino Perez after Madrid’s Champions League clash with Atalanta, things are said to have gotten worse with no new deal in sight.

Ramos told Perez he had “no interest” in the new deal to which Perez told Ramos’ people that Madrid would go ahead and plan the 2021/2022 season without him. That same report suggests that Ramos told Perez to “go ahead” and plan a future without him if need be.

Sergio Ramos is by far one of the greatest defenders of all time, having won championships at the club and national team level. The defender has 106 goals scored in his career, an unprecedented number for a player of his position.

At the moment, Ramos has no concrete offers to play elsewhere although his recent play indicates he still has a lot of gas in the tank and could be a very good pick up for any side that would want him. As for Real Madrid it is yet another episode that will not go over well with fans.
