A tiny part of the world populationhas appeared at least once in the Olympics, and an evensmaller proportion has ever competed in several Olympic Games. In at least five Olympic Games from Athens in 1896 to Pyeongchang in 2018, 515 athletes (127 women and 388 men) participated, with the exception of the 1906 Intercalated Games.

More than one hundred of them have taken part in the Olympics at least for the sixth time. The number would have been even larger, but due to factors outside of their control, like the World Wars, since no Olympic Gamestook place in 1916, 1940, or 1944;political boycotts, financial difficulties, or eventualinjuries.

Shooting, equestrian, sailing, and fencing are among the sports with the highest number of six-time Olympians. These sports are recognized for letting athletes compete for longer periods of time. Athletes who have competed in five Olympics may also be found in athletics and cross-country skiing.
