After missing a penalty in the first half, Cristiano Ronaldo appeared at 72-minute mark to score the second goal for Portugal against Denmark in second leg of the UEFA Nations League quarter-finals.
The Al Nassr star’s goal was his 136th for his country, which also marked the 929th of his career. However, the Ronaldo had earlier missed from the penalty spot with a weak shot that Kasper Schmeichel saved easily.
After that, Roberto Martinez’s men managed to open the scoring thanks to an own goal from Joachim Andersen in the 38th minute. Denmark, which won the first leg 1-0, then equalized through Rasmus Kristensen’s goal in the 56th minute.
It seemed like Denmark had control of the tie until Ronaldo, after struggling to make an impact in the first half, finally found the net. That goal was only his second against Denmark in four matches against them.
With Portugal leading 2-1, Christian Eriksen then scored to make it 2-2, giving Denmark a 3-2 advantage on aggregate. When Portugal’s chances seemed to fade, Trincao found the net to level the score once again and send the match to extra time.
Ronaldo out of the match before the 90th minute
Despite Portugal’s push, Cristiano Ronaldo was subbed off in the 92nd minute with apparent discomfort after speaking with Martinez. Gonçalo Ramos came on to replace the captain.
The winner of the match will face Germany, who beat Italy 5-4 on aggregate after tying 3-3 in the second leg of their match, in the UEFA Nations League semifinals.
