As the boxing world gears up for the highly anticipated clash between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford on September 13, an old warning from Mike Tyson has resurfaced—raising fresh debate about the risks involved.

The bout, which headlines TKO Boxing’s debut event under Dana White and backed by Turki Alalshikh, will see Crawford jump two weight classes in a bid to become the undisputed super middleweight champion. While excitement is building, some in the sport are urging caution.

Man, he can do what he wants but I don’t think that’s a good idea… People have done things crazy like that before, I just think he doesn’t have to do it,” Tyson said to ES News more than a year ago, reflecting on Crawford’s move up in weight to face Canelo.

Tyson isn’t alone in his skepticism. Other former fighters have echoed similar concerns, pointing out the danger in bridging such a significant weight gap, especially against a physically dominant champion like Canelo.
