You can’t talk about basketball without talking about John Calipari. As a matter of fact, you can’t write the history of college basketball without bringing in his name multiple times.
Nevertheless, all good things come to an end, and his career won’t be the exception to that rule. He’s not getting any younger, and he’s been doing this for decades now.
That’s why, even though he’s not thinking about retirement right now, the legendary coach is well aware of his professional mortality in this ever-evolving environment. In a recent sit-down with Jim Rome, he talked about that.
John Calipari talks about retirement
“As long as I can keep helping young people and their families, then I’ll do it,” Calipari said. “The minute I’m not capable of doing it because the rules have made it or the environment has made it with NIL and with the transfer portal — if it’s transactional versus transformational, why would I do it?”

Coach John Calipari
Even after a tough and disappointing stretch midway through the campaign, Calipari and the Arkansas Razorbacks made their way to the NCAA Tournament last season.
He’s clearly still relevant and a prominent figure in the college sports scene. But with the end inching closer, he and his teams should approach every game as if it might be the last.
